Regulatory T (Treg) cells expressing the transcription factor Foxp3 play an indispensable role in the maintenance of immune homeostasis by regulating inflammatory responses against invading pathogens and preventing destructive autoimmunity. Our overall research interest is to better understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the generation and lifestyle of Foxp3+ Treg cells. In this context, a particular emphasis is placed on the role of Treg cells in the breakdown of self-tolerance as well as the restoration of immune homeostasis in autoimmune diabetes.
