Research Focus
The research group led by Prof. Dr. med. habil. Peter Schwarz is especially focussed on the study of pathomechanisms in the development of type 2 Diabetes and in the prevention of Diabetes mellitus. One focus of their research is the investigation of circulating micro-RNA as a trigger for the development of insulin resistance as well as secretion failure of beta cells. Furthermore, clinical studies are conducted in order to find out to what extent risk stratification of risk persons for diabetes mellitus can predict the success of a lifestyle intervention. In this context, biomarkers and genetic markers and especially visceral and liver fat as risk markers are investigated. The group also focusses on innovative chronic care models especially using the potential of eHealth and telemedicine.
