Frequently Asked Questions
Account – login – logout – access to the PC-Pool
The assigning of the account names proceeds as follows:
- Abbreviation of the study programme
c for chemistry,l for Food Chemistry, a for lateral entrants (1 semester at another university), b for course-related time-limiter accounts - last digit of the enrollment year
e. g. 2012 → 2 - the first three letters of the last name
- the first three letters of the first name
No use of blank spaces or special characters: umlauts have to be rewritten, e. g. ä → ae, ß → ss;
Accents etc. have to be omitted, e. g. à → a, O' →
O
Example: For a chemistry student Jörg Baßner,
enrolled in 2010, the account would be: c0basjoe
Passwords must be changed at least once per year. A password that was used before cannot be set as new password. In Windows, the password can be changed as follows:
- simultaneously press the buttons CTRL+ALT+DEL
- click on "Change Password"
- enter the old password
- enter the new password twice (at least five characters)
- confirm with OK
In this case, you should get in contact with the pool supervisors during the office hours. Don't forget your student identity card.
After the password is expired, you can log in with your old password three more times (within the computer lab). Right after the first login, a new password should be chosen. Beware: Logging in from outside via VPN expends the remaining logins as well, but with no further warning.
In some cases, the system offers the standard local Windows login instead of the Novell login . Your username and password do not apply here and lead to the error message. You can find the option "Novell-Anmeldung" down below. If the problem occurs with the Novell login, the computer should be restarted. Should the restarts not help, please use another computer and inform the pool supervisor directly about the problem or fill in the reporting form, which you can find at the first line of tables.
If the login does not work on the other computers as well:
- … the account data might be damaged. In this case, ask the pool supervisors for help.
- … the account is possibly suspended. This concerns the first-year students, who attended only the instruction in FQ1, but not the following lesson. The pool supervisor can activate the account during the office hours.
- … the account was perhaps deleted. This can happen if a person took a semester off or enrolled with another name (due to marriage or the second forename was added at the admissions office, etc.) After completing the master's or diploma degree, the accounts will be deleted by default; the data can be restored if needed. For doctoral candidates, the administrator of the respective chair is responsible for the data restoration.
- … there could be a problem with a server. This is probable when other students in the computer lab have the same login problem. In this case, the PC supervisors or the IT coordinator should be informed.
The profile storage space may have been exceeded. In this case,
sort out the data in your personal profile (you can find it quickly
by entering %userprofile% in Windows Explorer). There is a symbol
in the info area of the taskbar (at the bottom right) you can
double-click to get a list with the largest files in your profile.
If the space is exceeded, the symbol is a white cross on red background;
more details under
tips
for profile maintenance.
In the info area of the taskbar (at the bottom right) you can find the red N (Novell Services). After right-clicking on "Novell-Anmeldung", you can enter the account name and password again. Afterwards, the network drives should become available.
This problem may arise if you log in on the computer, on which you already worked before, but in the meantime were logged in on another computer. In this case to continue working on another computer would be the simplest solution. The restart might function as well (sometimes it is necessary to restart the computer several times to delete the "stuck" profiles).
Right after the PC pool supervisor activated the chip card, the
access per Emeal should be possible both to the PC pools
CHE/181 and HSZ/203. Possible problems may be:
I was holding my chip card next to the card reader — nothing happened.
The card reader always gives a signal after the card was read
out: on the one hand, an optical signal (a red cross or a green
tick), and on the other hand, an acoustic signal. If the sensor
does not give any response at all, you should drag the card across
the sensor again (front or back side of the card). It is not necessary
to hold the card motionless to the sensor.
The card reader shows a red cross if I hold my card next to it.
With this signal, the reader shows that it does not recognize
the card (maybe you forgot to activate your new Emeal card?)
or there pcpool is closed at the moment. The lockout period is
always the case when, e. g.a lesson takes place in the PC
pool or if you try to enter the PC pool in the evening. The opening
hours are displayed next to the door of the PC pool and at
the website (short-term deviations can be found online only).
During the short breaks, when you leave your belongings in the
PC pool, you should mind the current time, so your belongings
do not get locked inside the PC pool.
The card reader shows a green tick when I hold my card next to it. But I still cannot open the door.
The closing mechanisms of the PC Pools are different. In PC pool CHE/181 (same as in AC pool CHE/399) you should push the door. On the opposite, in the PC pool HSZ/203 the door should be "unlocked" (you have to rotate the doorknob.)
In the computer lab: installed software
Different basic and science-related programmes are available in PC pool. The software, both in PC pools CHE/181 and HSZ/203, are not wholly identical, go to list of the installed applications..
All data have to be saved in the personal home directory H, which is displayed only for the users of the directory. The network drive H underlie a daily
data backup.
Deleted or changed data can be restored within 6 months.
Contacting person: Dr.
M. Mann
Important: for the students, the home directory storage is limited to 1 GB.
Finding out the occupied storage space of the network drive H:
In Windows Explorer, you can launch the "computer" view. By mouse over or with the right-clicking, the properties of the available or occupied space will be displayed.
The installing of the programs is explicitly prohibited! Equally, no data storage on the disk drive C is allowed.
With the CTRL+ALT+DEL you can start the task manager and check the ongoing processes, and whether firefox.exe is among them. If firefox.exe is running, it will be stopped. Otherwise, it might be helpful to create a new account. For this purpose, delete the folder H:\Firefox (attention, in doing so all the personal settings such as bookmarks will be lost). When starting Firefox, it will be automatically newly laid out.
Why are some elements not shown during the browsing with firefox?
In Firefox, the expansion Adblock Plus is installed, which blocks the pop-ups and the advertisement in the first place. If some desirable element is blocked, the Adblock Plus can be deactivated for the specific page through the ABP symbol in the bottom left part of the display. If the symbol is not displayed, the add-on bar can be shown through the view — symbol bar. If the display errors keep arising on the web page, you can deactivate ABP completely through extras — addons. If you still have problems with
installed plug-ins, you should write the error down in the entry form, which can be found in the first table row.
In the latest Java version on some of the websites, the safety prompts to the user are suppressed, and the plugin is completely blocked by default. The window appears containing the following message: "The application is blocked through the security settings". Chemgapedia, SciFinder, and Reaxys are activated. The propositions regarding any other important study-relevant pages with Java plugin are welcome and can be discussed with the
pool supervisors
USE OF SERVICES
In PC pool CHE/181 you can find a printer of the company Ricoh in the back corner of the PC pool. You can use the printer according to the following instructions. It is necessary to own a CopyCard (which you can acquire e. g. in StuRa barrack).
Attention: the PIN should be entered both on PC and on the printer alone by the user. The printing job should be confirmed directly on the device.
both for scanning
and printing the Ricoh copy card is needed, for which the scan process will be enabled as follows: first of all, you should log in on the pages of ZIH. For doing so, it is necessary to log in with your ZIH username and after that to enter the card number of the CopyCard.
After the successful and verified login, you′ll become a confirmation e-mail. With the input in scan server the e-mail with the approval confirmation from scannen@fritzsche-steinbach.de will be received — now the service for the card is active.
Using the copier:
- insert the card
- press the scan button on the left side of the copier
- on display appears the button Scan2me, tap this button
- load the document(s) and press the start button
- scan will be performed (300-dpi-pdf-document)
- When scanning from the Flatbed, there is always 60 seconds to lay down a further document. If the scan must be ended, please press the # button.
- remove the card
The access to the own data is possible on the network drive H: with the Browser via
Netstorage.
Attention: it is essential to enter the username including the context in the form of
login.stud .
Here
you can find the instructions about other options.
E-mails
On the desktop, you can find the link to the program "Pegasus Mail." For the basic use of the chemistry e-mail address (sending and receiving the e-mails) this program is already set up. This personal e-mail address will be assigned while providing with the username and as follows
Vorname.Nachname@chemie.tu-dresden.de
Attention: the mail folder is located in the own HOME directory under H:\Pmail. It′s not allowed to delete this folder!
In Pegasus Mail there is the possibility, to redirect all the incoming e-mails to another e-mail address. For that you should go to menu point Extras > Allgemeine Einstellungen > Erweiterte
Fähigkeiten under "Automatische Weiterleitung"
to enter twice the e-mail address and to set the tick next to the "Post
trotzdem zustellen" setzen.
If none of the emails arrive via the @chemie.tu-dresden.de to the desired target address, probably the configuration with Pegasus Mail proceeded incorrectly. Otherwise, you should check, whether the redirection address emails were sent to the spam folder; another possible reason is the overfilled post box.
Attention: during redirection the folder H:\Pmail must not be deleted. Otherwise, no mail delivery is possible!
Via the webmail interface, you can request and send every common internet browser to the e-mails. The login occurs with: login.stud
z. B. c0abcdef.stud
Attention: in the Webmail surface the sender address (Vorname.Name@chemie.tu-dresden.de) must be configured manually!
The local internet provider supplies the SMTP server for sending the e-mails from the private computer. When dialing in via the data center, e. g. the SMPT server of the data center should be used. The users of the dormitories take the SMTP server of their dormitory.
In this case ZIH can help further.
Software for the own PC – online portals
Some of the programs are free of charge for the students of the faculty, see student licenses. Further guidance on free of charge or discounted software can be found at ZIH
The formerly "Microsoft Imagine" ("Dreamspark", "MSDNAA"), where the MS operating systems was available for free, is no longer available.
Tip for urgent cases: Windows can be used for a couple of weeks without the license code. So it is possible to install Windows(e. g. ., from Windows DVD, which is anyway available, or via the download version) and to process the activation with the license from the Dreamspark later.
There exists the possibility to use ″Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus″ during the study period for free. For this purpose the registration at CampusSachsen
Einfach der Anleitung auf der Website folgen. Just follow the instructions on the website. (Attention: you should log in on the site once per month to approve, that you are still a student).
If you prefer your variant, you can use the fee-based
version of the website.
If you want to use the SciFinder, you should create your account at CAS, like every other student. For this purpose fill in the form
Read the "instructions for the password assigment"
before you chose a password.
Important: use TU email address, not the private one. You will then receive the confirmation letter. (access via Pegasus-Mail or VPN also from home).
The literature research can proceed via VPN
with the help of SciFinder
and Reaxys
from home office as well. On the
web page of
ZIH you can find a step-by-step explanation of how to arrange different VPN variants. The easiest variant is the access via
WebVPN.
Otherwise, Cisco AnyConnectis the alternative.
You can also use Origin from home for study and research purposes. The whole thing is explained step by step in our Origin installation guide.
You can delete the expired license. To do so, go to help > deactivate license > deactivate online löschen. Restart the Origin and create a new license file online and add it to the program. If a new program version is available at that time, it has to be installed.
