Inside the Writing Center: Learn and Writing Groups
The services offered by the Writing Center ("Schreibzentrum" - SZD) also include support for students who wish to network to collaborate in a study or writing group. We cooperate with the Central Student Information and Counseling Service in this effort.
Curious about what learning and writing groups are and how kick-off meetings work? Writing tutor Sharon answered 3 questions about them.
What makes the learning and writing groups offer?
The SZD organizes the study and writing groups together with colleagues from the Central Student Information and Counseling Service. Both are contact points that have a direct line to the students and their needs and problems.
It is not always possible to find suitable partners among friends or fellow students to study or write texts together. For example, because they work differently or because their schedules do not fit together. The SZD and the Central Student Advisory Service will help you find the right people to work with. In addition, through our experience working with students, we can provide practical tips to help you treat your study and writing group meetings engagingly and productively.
What happens at a founding group meeting?
The purpose of the founding meeting is for people to come together to form a group and agree on a time and place for their future meetings. To do this, we will first guide you in determining your needs and requirements for a study or writing group. Then you will have the opportunity to get to know your potential group members in a "speed dating" session and decide who you would like to work with. If necessary, we will moderate the group finding and the first organizational steps.
What benefits do you think students get from study and writing groups?
Study and writing groups create commitment. For those who find it difficult to motivate themselves regularly, this can be a great relief. In addition, you have a feedback partner for the texts you are working on or someone who quizzes you on the learning content. It should also not be underestimated how much you can learn by exchanging ideas with your fellow students. And for others, it's simply good to have a lunch date right away.
If you are interested in joining a study and writing group, attend one of the kick-off meetings. Alternatively, you can place an ad on OPAL in our learning and writing group exchange.
