Organization of environmental management at TU Dresden
For a continuous improvement process of the environmental performance the environmental management system must be firmly anchored in the organization of an organisation.
The university administration appointed the head of the Unit Infrastructural Facility Management as Environmental Management Officer. She is responsible for maintaining the environmental management system.
The Environmental Coordinator supports the Environmental Management Officer. The coordinator is part of the Group Environmental Protection and plans and coordinates internal audits, updates of the environmental management documentation and prepares the environmental program and the statement.
In-house environmental protection is managed by the Group Environmental Protection. This includes environmental management, waste management, hazardous materials transportation, pollution control and water conservation. A close cooperation exists also with the health, safety and radiation protection units. For example joint inspections are carried out regularly.
The Work Group Eco-Audit supports the environmental management and coordinates necessary tasks.
Since 1991 there exists the Environmental Commission (Kommission Umwelt) at the TU Dresden. It consists of members of all faculties and acts as a driving force and source of ideas for environmental research and educational topics for the university administration.
The environmental organisation for students (TUUWI) wants students to become actively engaged in environmental protection at TU Dresden. It organizes environmental lectures and engages in projects with different environmental topics, such as recycled paper, organic food in the cafeteria, photovoltaic systems at the university or energy conservation in residential homes. In cooperation with the environmental coordinator the TUUWI organises the environmental day at the TU Dresden.
The responsibilities of occupational safety and environmental protection at the Faculty of Medicine is covered by an agency contract between the TU Dresden and the University Hospital. In the clinic exists therefore an independent division. It is called hospital hygiene/environmental protection.
