Tasks and activities
Asphalt is essential for road construction. High demands are placed on the product. Building material testers: test and assess not only asphalt, also aggregates, bitumen and asphalt granulate used to make asphalt.
Construction material testers: asphalt technology specialists take samples (e.g. asphalt mix and drill cores from the finished layer) for quality assurance on construction sites and test them for their properties with regard to the requirements for road construction. The samples to be tested are examined in accordance with defined test specifications using physical and/or chemical methods and modern testing equipment. In addition to the established test methods, "performance" tests are currently gaining in importance. The handling of test equipment, for the maintenance of which they are jointly responsible, is an important part of the job. The test results obtained are documented and summarized by the building material testers. Building material testers produce asphalt mixes themselves in the laboratory and use them to form test specimens on which tests are carried out. If the requirements for the asphalt are met, the asphalt mix composition, for example, is forwarded to the asphalt mixing plant.
In close consultation with the other employees, building material testers plan the preparation and execution of the tests. They apply technical regulations such as testing standards. They must work precisely and responsibly. Once the tests have been carried out, they calculate the test results, document them using PCs and discuss them with the head of the laboratory.

- Measuring layer thicknesses and testing the surface properties of asphalt in the laboratory and on construction sites
- Checking and evaluating work results, analyzing, processing and documenting data
- Operating, maintaining, calibrating and adjusting laboratory equipment and facilities
- Reading and applying technical documents, creating test and results reports, assessing conformity with regulations
Prerequisites
Scientific and technical understanding, good knowledge of mathematics, interest in physics and chemistry, technical understanding or interest, reliability; initiative; physical resilience, good school performance
