15. Retina Information Day: Advances in Eye Research and Treatment of Retinal Diseases in Saxony
Our eyes and our vision are the key to our perception of the world and an independent life. However, numerous retinal diseases present a threat to our vision. On November 16, 2024, the Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden (CRTD) of TU Dresden invites you to the 15. Retina Information Day, which focuses on retinal disease research and new therapeutic approaches. The event is aimed at patients, their relatives, and interested parties - both on-site and online.
The Retina Information Day brings together leading researchers, ophthalmologists, affected individuals, and interested parties to exchange current knowledge about retinal health, innovative treatment methods, and support offers. Participants can expect interesting lectures, open question-and-answer sessions, and insights into retinal research, which has been a focus in Dresden for 15 years.
Age-Related Macular Degeneration and Retinitis Pigmentosa in Focus
This year, the event focuses on two diseases: age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and retinitis pigmentosa (RP). Renowned researchers will present the latest research and clinical developments - from gene therapies, through opportunities that retinal plasticity offers, to promising future therapeutic approaches.
Highlights of the day:
- 15 years of retinal research in Dresden - Prof. Marius Ader (Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden) and Franz Badura (Retina International) look back on 15 years of eye research in Dresden and provide an outlook for future developments in ophthalmology.
- Retinal plasticity in retinitis pigmentosa - Prof. Susanne Koch (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München) discusses the adaptability of the retina and its significance for therapy.
- Current developments in the treatment of AMD - Prof. Oliver Zeitz (Charité Berlin) presents the latest advances in treatments for age-related macular degeneration.
- Protection through gene therapy for macular degeneration - Prof. Christian Grimm (University Hospital Zurich) highlights innovative gene therapy approaches that could stop the progression of AMD.
Moreover, junior scientists will present their current projects in flash talks. At the end of the event, there will be an opportunity to discuss with our speakers. The discussion round will be recorded as part of the "YOU ASK we explain" podcast series of the Medical Faculty of TU Dresden.
Information Booths and Interactive Exhibitions On-Site
At the CRTD, participants will have the opportunity to exchange ideas with our researchers and support organizations such as PRO RETINA e.V. and the EUTB (Supplementary Independent Participation Counseling) at numerous information booths. A walk-through eye model will help illustrate the anatomy of the eye and the development of retinal diseases.
The organizers invite everyone interested in eye health and the latest research in the field. Participation is free - both at the CRTD and online. Press and media are also welcome to join.

About the Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden (CRTD)
The Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden (CRTD) of TUD Dresden University of Technology is an academic home for scientists from more than 30 nations. Their mission is to discover the principles of cell and tissue regeneration and leverage this for the recognition, treatment, and reversal of diseases. The CRTD links the bench to the clinic, scientists to clinicians to pool expertise in stem cells, developmental biology, gene-editing, and regeneration towards innovative therapies for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, hematological diseases such as leukemia, metabolic diseases such as diabetes, bone and retina diseases. The CRTD was founded in 2006 as a research center of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and funded until 2018 as a DFG Research Center, as well as a Cluster of Excellence. Since 2019, the CRTD is funded by the TU Dresden and the Free State of Saxony.
The CRTD is one of three institutes of the central scientific facility Center for Molecular and Cellular Bioengineering (CMCB) of the TU Dresden.
