"Campus line": Improved transport infrastructure for better accessibility to TU Dresden
New tram line along Nossener Brücke and Nürnberger Straße is being established
The planning approval procedure for the new "Campus Line" tram line between Löbtau and Nürnberger Ei along Nossener Brücke and Nürnberger Straße has been successfully completed. This means that a milestone has been reached for the major project in the south of Dresden and the new line can now be implemented.
Mayor of Transport Stephan Kühn: "I am delighted that the planning approval decision means that the right to build the campus line between Löbtau and TU Dresden is now in place. The campus line is a key project for climate-friendly mobility. In addition to the good public transport connection in the southwest of Dresden, it will provide better regional connections with the new S-Bahn stop at Nossener Brücke. The avenue character along Nürnberger Straße enhances the design of the urban space."
The replacement of the Nossener Brücke bridge will also secure this important alternative route for freeway traffic. The construction project is particularly concerned with providing public transport access to the TU Dresden campus that gives the bridge its name. The new direct connection with tram line 7 and the new footpaths and cycle paths will noticeably improve TU Dresden's transport links. Jan Gerken, Chancellor of TU Dresden, explains: "The campus line further improves the general accessibility of TU Dresden and greatly supports TUD's efforts to implement its mobility vision - i.e. a 'very easily accessible, lively, sustainable and innovative TU campus with a high quality of stay'."
Lars Seiffert, CEO of DVB , comments: "We also have the vision of bringing the students and employees of TU Dresden to the campus in a comfortable and climate-friendly way. The best way to achieve this is by tram. Bus route 61 is bursting at the seams with 30,000 passengers. Despite the extra services, the buses are regularly overcrowded and run late, especially before and after lectures."
The main construction project on the 1.7-kilometre route between the Tharandter Straße central stop and just before Nürnberger Ei will start at the end of 2025. The construction costs are expected to amount to 324 million euros and the construction project will last until fall 2031. During construction, traffic will be maintained on the route - both directions of travel will continue to be accessible with restrictions.
Other construction measures will start as early as June 2024, when SachsenEnergie will build a district heating tunnel under the railroad line, replacing the above-ground variant that has been in place to date. "This change an underground tunnel is necessary because the current district heating bridge would be in the way of the new, wider traffic train on the campus line," says Dr. Franziska Graube-Kühne, Head of Technology in the Power and Heat division at SachsenEnergie. "Initial construction preparations for the tunnel, which will be around 270 meters long, have already been publicly visible on the streetscape next to Zwickauer Straße for several weeks." The new district heating tunnel, in which electricity and telecommunications lines will also run in parallel and which is therefore also known as the "media culvert", is one of several district heating construction sites as part of the district heating expansion in Dresden.
In recent years, preparatory measures for the large-scale project have already been implemented along Nossener Brücke and Nürnberger Straße and various stretches have been renovated to serve as detour routes during construction. For example, on Würzburger Straße and Zwickauer Straße.
About the overall campus line project
In future, trams will run between Löbtau and Strehlen, taking passengers quickly and directly to their destination. The campus line consists of a total of four construction phases. The first new section between Wasaplatz and Tiergartenstraße has been in operation since 2019. In the same year, the new central stop "Tharandter Straße" on Kesselsdorfer Straße was put into operation. Trams should be able to run on the current section from 2030. Planning is progressing for the final section from Nürnberger Platz via Zellescher Weg and Caspar-David-Friedrich-Straße to Wasaplatz. Construction is not expected to start here until 2029 at the earliest.
On the campus line, tram lines 7 in the west and 9 in the east will initially serve the campus together with bus line 61; in the long term, a new tram line 14 could replace line 61. The declared aim is to use the improved public transport connections to drive forward the transport revolution in Dresden. DVB hopes to attract 1.35 million new passengers per year with the campus line.
