Alumnus of the Month September: Building bridges between Dresden and Columbia
Simon Barbosa showed an affinity for technology from an early age and was interested in how and why electrical devices work. In the 1980s, he studied Communications Engineering because he found it fascinating how people can communicate with each other over long distances with the help of technical devices and systems. An agreement between Colombia and the German Democratic Republic (GDR) allowed him to study in the GDR on a scholarship at the University of Traffic Science, which became a part of TUD after the reunification of Germany.
His advice to today's students is to research and learn as much as you can about your discipline, to enjoy your time as a student, to stay well-informed about what is happening in your country and the world, and to get involved with politics.
He is still in touch with TUD today, about which he commented, “I am grateful to TUD and to Germany because the city and the uni were my homes while I studied. This is why I want to help TUD achieve its goals today and why I am always available as a regional ambassador to be a bridge between TUD members, the city of Dresden and Colombia.
