Anniversary of the Russian attack on Ukraine
February 24 marks the anniversary of Russia's attack on Ukraine. Prof. Ursula M. Staudinger, Rector of TU Dresden, on the university's responsibility and its contribution to solidarity with the people affected by the war.
February has been a particularly difficult month for Dresden since the Second World War. Just a few days ago, we formed a human chain under the motto “Lest we forget! Shaping peace together.” to remember the atrocities committed under national socialism. We stood firmly for peace and the protection of democracy.
Since February 24, 2022, this month has acquired an additional and new gravity due to the start of Putin’s war of aggression against Ukraine, which contravenes international law. Since the start of the war, an unimaginable number of people have lost their lives and millions have had to flee. Cities and civilian infrastructure has been destroyed. The assumption that there is peace in Europe has been lost. The need to strengthen defense forces in Europe and NATO has risen to the forefront.
These developments are both frightening and unnerving. And yet, they have also propelled us into action. As a university, we bear a societal responsibility. We are committed to solidarity and the creation of peace. Thanks to the support of the Association of Friends and Sponsors of TU Dresden as well as other foundations and companies, we have been able to and will continue to welcome researchers and students who seek refuge. We have also established digital teaching collaborations with our Ukrainian partner universities. I was grateful and deeply moved by the great number of individuals from our TUD community who offered their help during the first days of the war. To this day, there is active commitment to help via the we-care-engagement mailing list.
Together over the past twelve months, we have demonstrated that we truly are a university community whose members passionately fight for an open, peaceful and democratic Europe. For all of this, I am incredibly grateful.
Today, on the anniversary of the start of the war, there will be an opportunity to once again showcase our efforts: https://www.standwithukrainedresden.de/. On behalf of the Extended University Executive Board, I cordially invite you to stand together with our Ukrainian friends and to advocate for a peaceful and democratic future with them.
