Measuring the environment with gummy bears: Dr. Simon Binder receives KlarText Prize for Science Communication
Dr. Simon Binder, who completed his doctorate at the Institute of Solid State Electronics at TU Dresden, is the laureate of the KlarText Prize for Science Communication 2022. The prize is awarded by the Klaus Tschira Foundation to eary-career scientists for particularly successful, generally understandable articles about their doctoral theses. This year, 215 doctoral candidates submitted their contributions, and six were selected as prize winners.
In his article "Measuring the environment with gummy bears", Simon Binder describes how stimulus-responsive hydrogels can be used in sensors to measure various variables such as salt concentration, pH value or blood sugar level. As part of his thesis, he developed a measurement method based on dual-sensitive hydrogels. This enables the response behavior and other important properties of this type of sensor to be significantly improved. The patented sensor principle is expected to bring hydrogel-based sensors a major step closer to application in the industrial and medical sector.
Dr. Simon Binder is currently continuing his scientific career as a postdoc at the University of Utah (USA).
The awarded article will be published on the day of the award ceremony on October 13, 2022. For detailed information visit the KlarText Prize website: https://klartext-preis.de/
