DRESDEN-concept Open Air Science Slam 23rd May 2016-Theaterplatz
On Monday, 23rd May 2016 from 7pm onwards, five Slammers from four nations and four different DRESDEN-concept institutes will present their key research areas. The slams will display the research diversity of the DRESDEN-concept partners, be it in German or English, be it about flatworms or restoration. The Slam is accompanied by music by the band “bergen”.
The free Open Air Science Slam represents the internationality of the DRESDEN-concept research institutions, through international Slammers and contributions in German or English. The Slams are supported by presentations, which have subtitles in the other language, so that all visitors can follow the Slams.
A microbiologist and a cell biologist will present the key research areas of the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology. A chemist from the Helmholtz Centre Dresden-Rossendorf, an art historian of the Dresden State Art Collection and a nano-scientist from the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research will present to the public topics as divers as cancer research, micro-motors or restoration and documentation.
Before and during the Slam the band “bergen” will play some “Folkpop”. The band members are from TU Dresden and from the Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research Dresden e.V..
At the Science Slam scientists have the opportunity of putting their research projects on stage in an entertaining way. In only a few minutes, complex science is presented in an inspiring and inspirational manner, using simple and understandable imagery. Unlike at a Poetry Slam, tools and aids are permitted at the Science Slam e.g. stage props and live experiments. In the end, the public decides which Slammer is crowned the winner.
The Open Air Science Slam is a joint project of some of the DRESDEN-concept partners. DRESDEN-concept is an alliance of 22 research institutions as strong partners from the world of science and culture. Together with the TU Dresden the following institutions are DRESDEN-concept partners: five Fraunhofer institutes (IWI, IPMS, IKTS, FEP, IVI), three Max Planck institutes (CBG,PKS,CPfS), four Leibniz institutes (IPF, IFW, IÖR, Senckenberg), two Helmholtz institutes (HZDR, DZNE), the Carl Gustav Carus university hospital, four culture (SLUB, SKD, DHMD, MHM) and two associate partners (HTW, LfA). The DRESDEN-concept cooperation is aimed at the development and use of synergies in research, education, infrastructure, administration and knowledge transfer. Partners coordinate strategies to support Dresden’s leading areas and identify emerging scientific areas. DRESDEN-concept also works on a joint initiative to attract top, academic talents and to tie them to Dresden, as a prime science location.
