transCampus Dean Prof. Stefan Bornstein Admitted as Freeman of the City of London
A special honor was conferred upon Prof. Dr. Stefan Bornstein, Dean of the transCampus and Director of Internal Medicine at the Carl Gustav Carus University Hospital Dresden of TUD Dresden University of Technology. He was appointed Freeman of the City of London, an honor bestowed upon individuals who have made important contributions to society. It is extremely rare for this honor to be awarded to people who are not residents of either the United Kingdom or the Commonwealth.
Prof. Bornstein received this special recognition for his significant contribution to the development of the transCampus, a unique UK-German partnership between the renowned universities of King's College London and TUD Dresden University of Technology.
The tradition of honorary citizenship of London dates back to the 13th century. Many well-known personalities bear the title of Freeman of the City of London. Nelson Mandela, Diana Princess of Wales, Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling, Winston Churchill, Bill Gates and Helmut Kohl are among the notable recipients of the honor.
Admission to this select circle takes place upon the recommendation and nomination of already distinguished members of the Freedom of the City of London.
After approval by the Court of the Common Council, the sealed membership certificate is handed over in Chamberlain's Court at the London Guildhall during a special ceremony. The new member takes the oath of Freeman of London, in which he swears to protect the city of London and to preserve peace in the kingdom. Historically, this status has been associated with rights that today are largely symbolic, such as the right to carry a bow and arrow or to drive sheep across London Bridge.
For Prof. Bornstein, this honor, which makes him the first scientist and citizen of Saxony to receive the award, is not only a personal accolade, but also a special tribute to the successful transCampus project, in which many eminent scientists in England, Germany and beyond have participated.
This award highlights the value of collaboration and cohesion in Europe, and underscores the recognition that an organization like transCampus receives for its outstanding work.
