TU Dresden among the top 50 universities worldwide in THE World University Ranking for third-party funding income and patents
TU Dresden is ranked 46th worldwide in the "Industry" category of the 2024 THE World University Ranking. With 99.7 out of a possible 100 points, TUD scores particularly well in this category. In the overall ranking, TUD ranks 161st, placing it among the top ten percent of all universities listed.
In the "Industry" category, the ranking assessed two things: The amount of research funding that universities receive from industry. It also considers how often the research is cited in patents. In both fields, THE certifies that TU Dresden has an outstanding status in a global comparison. According to an evaluation by the German Economic Institute Cologne (IW Köln), TU Dresden is the university with the most patents in Germany. Every year, around 100 new inventions are patented.
"The result of the ranking not only shows that we are conducting excellent research here, but rather that our work is having an impact in the scientific communities and in the economy," explains Ursula M. Staudinger, Rector of TU Dresden. "This also reflects the efforts we have made in recent years to expand our range of services in the areas of innovation, transfer and entrepreneurship," she adds.
TUD will from now on pool its innovation activities in central fields of action with the Center of Excellence for Innovation, Transfer and Entrepreneurship (TUD|excite): From patent management and support for research-based innovation projects on their way to application, to strategic partnerships with companies and support for spin-offs.
THE World University Rankings is one of the most circulated and well-received institutional university rankings. The focus of the ranking is on research indicators. Citations, in particular, are heavily weighted. Reputation surveys also have a major influence.
Extensive methodological changes have been made in the current edition, especially in the indicators and their weighting. The indicators "Research strength," "Research excellence," and "Research influence" have been added. A new patent indicator has been introduced, which measures the rate at which each university's research is cited in patents.
