TU Dresden mourns the loss of the honorary senator Henry Arnhold
It was announced today (24th August 2018) that Henry Arnhold passed away yesterday evening in New York City.
Henry Arnhold was born on 15th September 1921 in Dresden. Despite his traumatising childhood experiences in Dresden during the Nazi regime that caused him to flee Germany, he has continually supported his birthplace and Technische Universität Dresden since the fall of communism in 1989. For his efforts – and in the same vein as his grandfather, father, and uncle – TU Dresden bestowed the title of honorary senator upon him in May 2011.
On this occasion, Prof. Hans Müller-Steinhagen, Rector of TUD, fondly recalls Henry Arnhold’s continuous, outstanding dedication to TU Dresden: “Henry Arnhold has left a profound impression on us with his wisdom, his commitment, his big heart, his cheerfulness and, above all, his willingness to forgive. On behalf of all members of TU Dresden, I would like to express my sincerest condolences to his family and friends.”
Since the 1990s, Arnhold enabled TUD students to spend a year at the New School for Social Studies in New York. “The international exchange, the understanding between different nations and the promotion of young people were all very dear to his heart,” says Prof. Hans Vorländer, coordinator for the New School exchange programme and director of the Henry Arnhold Summer School. He adds that “Henry Arnhold was the source of ideas and the generous sponsor of the cooperation between TU Dresden and the city’s cultural institutions – a unique collaboration, which draws multitudes of young people to Dresden every year. In line with Henry Arnhold’s motto ‘Continue to build bridges’, we will open the sixth Summer School in September. Dresden is forever indebted to his unrivalled commitment and his philanthropic spirit”.
