How can fruit flies help cure Alzheimer's? Video "Kurze Frage" with Prof. Stefanie Schirmeier
Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's are diseases in which nerve cells die and thus the functionality of the brain decreases. At the Faculty of Biology at TU Dresden, Prof. Stefanie Schirmeier and her team are conducting research to better understand such diseases. With the help of fruit flies, they are investigating how the glial cells - helper cells of the neurons - adapt to changed circumstances. Fruit flies, also called Drosophila, are so valuable for biological research because they reproduce quickly , are easy to handle and especially because the processes in the brain are similar to those in humans.
This episode of "Kurze Frage" was created in collaboration with Nele Kheim, Emma Markwardt, Helen Rothfuß from the Biology in Society master's program. More information about the program: https://tud.link/onr9
