Ten Years of Fascination: DLR_School_Lab TU Dresden Celebrates Anniversary
The DLR_School_Lab at Technische Universität Dresden celebrated its tenth anniversary in November. At this extracurricular learning space, students can carry out their own experiments from various research areas of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the TU Dresden under the motto "Out of the classroom, into the laboratory."
"The school lab looks back on a successful decade of intensive collaboration with three important partners: TU Dresden, DLR and the state capital Dresden," says Dr. Janina Hahn, Head of DLR_School_Lab TU Dresden. Prof. Michael Kobel, Vice-Rector for Education at TU Dresden, also emphasised the close and fruitful cooperation, especially with the TUD's school contact point, in his welcoming address: "The joint promotion of young people's curiosity arouses lasting interest and enthusiasm for science, especially on the basis of current topics.
Activities of the School Laboratory
Since its foundation in 2013, approximately 25,000 children, adolescents and adults have benefited from the wide range of activities offered by DLR_School_Lab TU Dresden. The young scientists have come not only from Dresden, the State of Saxony and Germany as a whole but also from many international schools and universities. The school laboratory not only organizes experimental days for school classes but also participates in events and fairs such as "Juniordoktor" or "Girls'Day-Akademie Dresden". Students are also supported in the context of school internships. Additionally, DLR_School_Lab supports young people in various competitions, including the German CanSat Competition, in which in-house teams have successfully participated four times, achieving third place in both 2016 and 2023. From the very beginning, DLR_School_Lab TU Dresden has also been involved in working with volunteers, including German, Polish, and Czech young people.
Collaboration with DLR Institute of Software Methods for Product Virtualization
In 2019, the DLR Institute of Software Methods for Product Virtualization was opened in Dresden. Since then, both institutions have been working closely together in the field of promoting young talent. For example, the Long Night of Sciences (LNdW) was jointly conducted in 2022 and 2023, and the supervision of student interns was collectively undertaken to inspire the next generation for the exciting topics in aerospace, energy, and transportation.
"DLR_School_Lab TU Dresden sincerely thanks all partners, employees, and volunteers for the successful collaboration over the past ten years," Dr. Janina Hahn emphasizes. In the future, DLR_School_Lab TU Dresden aims to continue inspiring young people for science and technology.
