Improvisation: an interdisciplinary experiment
What the neighbors are doing: The Dresden Music Master Classes run from September 17 to 22, 2018 at Dresden College of Music
The Dresden Music Master Classes from September 17 to 22, 2018, at Dresden College of Music focus above all on interpretation.
As Goethe wrote in Wilhelm Meisters Wanderjahre in 1821, it would be a poor art that could be grasped all at once, whose latest secret could immediately be understood by the first to observe it. That sentiment still holds true some two hundred years later. Art is something that must involve you; something to contemplate, to approach slowly as you gradually explore its depth and complexity. This is perhaps especially true for performers, whose task it is to interpret musical works of art for the audience to experience.
Seven master classes will be led by leading tutors and an ensemble in residence. There will also be an extensive program of other events including classes on physioprophylaxis, guided tours, panel discussions, and music physiology lectures. Günter Baby Sommer will conduct an improvisation course, this time entitled “Improvising: an interdisciplinary experiment with musicians and visual artists” (Improvisieren – Ein spartenübergreifendes Experiment mit Musikern und bildenden Künstlern). He will be assisted by the “Meisterschüler” (masterclass students) from Prof. Carsten Nicolai’s class (HfBK Dresden): Antje Meichsner, Felix Ermacora and Simon Hillme. A flash mob with master class participants in the Dresden S-Bahn is also planned.
The highlight of the master classes will be the closing concert with course participants on September 22, 2018, at 7:30 p.m. in the Dresden College of Music concert hall.
