COST: European Cooperation in Science and Technology
European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST): a unique means for European researchers, engineers and scholars to jointly develop their own ideas and new initiatives across all fields of science and technology through trans-European networking of nationally funded research activities.
COST Actions are a flexible, fast, effective and efficient networking instrument for researchers, engineers and scholars to cooperate and coordinate nationally funded research activities. COST Actions allow European researchers to jointly develop their own ideas in any science and technology field.
Terms of Funding
COST does NOT fund research itself, but supports networking via different tools such as meetings, workshops, short term scientific missions, training schools and dissemination activities. The funds provided by COST can be used for the organization and implementation of such events as well as for travel costs of participants.
The research on which the COST Action is based has to be funded by the participating institutions themselves.
COST Actions are funded for a period of four years.
Applicants
Participation is open to researchers:
-
in universities, research centres, large and small, public and private organisations from all 36 COST Member Countries and its Cooperating State
-
from any science and technology field
-
at any career stage
-
having any original, innovative idea
COST Action proposals can be submitted at any time throughout the year via the new e-COST online submission tool.
Following a collection date proposals will be reviewed in a two-stage process. In case of a positive evaluation, at least five COST member countries must sign a Memorandum of Understanding, which was initiated by at least one research institution of one country. It is therefore recommended to ensure support of the project idea from other research institutions before submitting a proposal.
