We need space to learn! Student representatives of Dresden University School call for a demonstration for the new building
The University School Dresden is growing and growing, the plans for a new building are in place. However, shortly before the city council's decision, the decision to start construction is on the brink - for the second completed design planning. The students call for the demonstration "We need space to learn! Demonstration for a learning building for Dresden University School" in front of the town hall.
The Dresden City Council meets on Thursday, March 20. Item 13 on the agenda is the decision on the new building for Dresden University School at the Höckendorfer Weg site.
Appeal by the student representatives
"The implementation of the new building for our school has been repeatedly postponed in recent years. Now it might not even be built. At the moment, we pupils are learning in a. GDR building and a mobile room unit (container building). There is already a lack of space, which will not disappear in the next few years due to the increasing number of year groups. In our opinion, this is unacceptable. As the school of the future, all pupils need space to learn!
Come to the demonstration against cuts on March 20, 2025, and demonstrate for your school or your children's school!
Meeting point: 14:00 Alaunplatz | 16:30 Rathaus"
The demonstration will take place together with the events of the Bündnis gegen Kürzungen Dresden. The alliance of individuals and initiatives provides information about the schedule on the website https://www.kuerzungennichtmituns.de.
Planned growth has already led to congestion

Pupils at Dresden University School have been studying in an old GDR building since 2019 and in an additional container building since 2022. Capacities are once again over-utilised.
Since its foundation in 2019, the school trial has grown from 200 pupils to up to 1,000 children and young people. According to current planning, a move would not be possible until 2029 at the earliest. Since 2022, the primary and middle schools have been learning in container buildings, which are designed to be used for five years. There is not enough space for further growth in the current buildings.
The school community is waiting for a learning building with sufficient space for all pupils, with more than one fully equipped science classroom and more than one single-field gym. A teaching kitchen is also missing in the current old GDR building. This is needed for the subject HTW Household, Technology, Economics, which is part of the curriculum at the community school.

The structure and evaluation commission for the school of the future trial, the only one of its kind in Germany, organized by TU Dresden and the City of Dresden, recently called once again for the implementation of a contemporary school building.
Media coverage on the school website "A learning building for the university school" traces developments since 2019. The page also provides information about the #PixelSpenden fundraising campaign, in which the school community raised millions for a public building.
