VPN - Virtual Private Network
The use of access via VPN is necessary in the following cases:
- for the use of services from computers outside the TU Dresden, but which are only activated for the TU Dresden network (e.g. databases or internal TUD websites),
- for access to resources within the TUD or the Faculty of Chemistry that are not accessible from outside for security reasons (e.g. remote access to measuring computers).
Access via VPN requires uniform secure authentication. This takes place at the central VPN gateways of the ZIH of the TUD.
The appropriate VPN client software must be installed and configured on the user's computer. Information on this and a download option for the software can be found via the link below.
Three levels of VPN access are possible:
- general VPN access: ZIH-Login@tu-dresden.de
-> vpn2.zih.tu-dresden.de: Cisco- AnyConnect -Client / WebVPN
This means that all resources that are activated for the TU network are accessible. Resources that are also protected from access from the general TU network (administration access, computers in the network area of the faculty) are not accessible. - Access to the Chair's VPN network: ZIH-Login@chm-ma-xx-vpn
-> vpn2.zih.tu-dresden.de: Cisco-AnyConnect-Client
For the former Institutes of the Faculty of Chemistry (xx = ac, anc, bc, lc, mc, oc, pc, tc, vw), privileged dedicated small network areas are assigned, from which resources can also be accessed in protected network areas of the faculty.
The responsible administrators manage the ZIH logins from their area that are allowed to use this access. They are also the contact persons for the resources that should be accessible in their employee network in this way (e.g. file transfer to the file server, remote desktop on measurement computers). - Admin VPN: ZIH-Login@tud-admin-vpn, with 2-factor authentication with Yubi key
-> vpn2.zih.tu-dresden.de: Cisco-AnyConnect-Client
These accesses must be applied for individually at the ZIH and enable access to specially protected resources (e.g. for administration).
Independent of this, there are further VPN accesses for special applications such as SAP.
