The mentoring program Join Science for female students and early-career researchers at TU Dresden supports participants in building, reflecting on and networking in various phases of their own academic career. It is aimed at students from the STEM fields who are interested in an career in science and would like to actively learn about doctoral studies at TU Dresden while studying.
As part of the program, female students gain a practical insight into the individual everyday scientific life of their mentor and have the opportunity to exchange ideas with a female scientist in personal mentoring sessions. This enables them to learn about different career paths in science and ask their individual questions about doctoral studies at TU Dresden. This will give them a deeper insight into the structures, processes, and regulations of scientific work. In this way, students are guided through their decision-making process and gain greater clarity about whether a doctorate is the right way for them.
For female early-career researchers from the Clusters of Excellence and DFG-funded research areas at TU Dresden, the program is a valuable opportunity to share their acquired knowledge and previous experience with students in mentoring sessions. As important contact persons, they play a key role in helping students make the transition from their studies to a possible doctorate. At the same time, they can reflect on their own careers, expand their own network and further develop their skills in science communication.

Mentoring is a personal support relationship between an experienced person (mentor) and a less experienced person (mentee). The focus is on the goals and needs of the mentees. Mentoring is based on a personal, trusting and protected exchange at eye level. Both professional as well as personal and interdisciplinary topics can be discussed. Mentoring encourages individual learning and development processes and offers both participants the opportunity to learn from each other and gain new perspectives.
Mentoring Round
The program starts every year in April with a kick-off event and ends in December with a certificate presentation ceremony. Students can complete the following content:
- Mentoring meetings with personal insights into the career path and working world of a scientist
- Different workshops to strengthen interdisciplinary skills and soft skills
- Peer Talks among the female students for further networking and exchange
