Reading Exercise: "Seneca, Dialogi" Scope (L/E/S/P): 0/2/0/0 Lecturer: Dr. Antje Junghanß Time: Monday, 2nd DS (09:20-10:50) Location: BSS/149 Notes: The subject of the reading exercise is Seneca's Dialogus De constantia sapientis: Seneca describes there, as the title already indicates, that the wise man remains unimpressed and calm in the face of all challenges: Injustice and insult cannot harm him. Seneca develops advice on how to succeed in developing such an attitude. These considerations, which at least in part can also be applicable to today's readers, will be embedded in Stoic ethics in the course. Short passages from other philosophical texts will also be included; the interests of the course participants will be taken into account in the selection of reading materials. |
Exercise Reading for Beginners: "Ovid, Metamorphoses" Scope (L/E/S/P): 0/2/0/0 Lecturer: Dr. Glenn Patten Time: Tuesday, DS 4, 13:00 - 14:30 Location: ABS/2-13 Notes: In nova fert animus mutatas dicere formas corpora: Already the beginning of Ovid's Metamorphoses clearly reveals an interest in the relationship between language and matter, active creative will and observational description. This is expressed not least in Ovid's stories of works of art and artists, in which the connection between word and image is particularly central. In the reading, the most important characteristics of epic metrics and poetic language will be worked out on the basis of appropriately selected passages, in addition to translation and interpretation work. |
Lecture: "Text and Image in the Ancient World" The lecture is open to anyone interested. All texts will be translated; knowledge of ancient Greek or Latin is not required to attend the lecture. |

Exercise: " Xenophon, Hellenika " Scope (L/E/S/P): 0/2/0/X Lecturer: Dr. Glenn Patten Time: Thursday, 5 DS (14:50-16:20) Location: W48/103 Notes: Presumably Xenophon of Athens (c. 430-354 BC) wrote his Ἑλληνικά (wtl. "Greek Affairs") in two phases; a first, perhaps not too long after 401, in which he recounted the final years of the Peloponnesian War (roughly books I-II), and a second, probably in the 350s, in which he continued this history to 361 BC (books III-VII). The first part, with which the reading will deal, formally reveals itself at the beginning as a continuation of the historical work of Thucydides; in fact, however, there are great differences between our author and his great predecessor both methodologically and in the form of presentation. The focus of the reading will be on the linguistic coverage of the text; in addition, questions around Xenophon's historiographical and literary approach will be addressed. |
