General information for the degree programme
This Master’s Program leads up to the university qualification as a philologist. It builds upon the knowledge and skills of a pertinent Bachelor’s program.
Students select one of 5 majors and can also set a particular focus of their own inside this major. They gain extensive know-how in the methodology of Linguistics, Literary Studies, and Cultural Studies and acquire the ability to analyze and interpret speech as well as literary and cultural texts by means of this methodology.
Furthermore, students are strive to gain more in-depth understanding of the cultural area studied as well as a high proficiency in the language studied.
This Program of Study combines a focus on research with an instruction in applied competences, and thus opens its graduates access to research-based and other professional sectors for their future careers.
Content of Master’s Program
Classes in the student’s major account for three quarters of this program of study while the interdisciplinary supplementary area accounts for one quarter of this program’s classes.
The program is broken down into classes in Linguistics, Literary Studies, and Cultural Studies, where the students themselves decide what branch they would like to specialize in. Apart from seminars and lectures, language training classes are also part of the program in four of five majors so as for students to consolidate the knowledge and skills they already possess in the language selected.
The following foreign languages can be selected as majors:
- English - English Department
- Latin and Old Greek – Classical Languages
- French or Italian – Romance Languages
- two of the languages of Polish, Russian, Czech – Slavic Languages (for the second of the two languages, no previous knowledge is required).
The program in the major German Studies (‘Germanistik’) does not feature any language class modules.
In the supplementary area, more foreign languages and / or subject matter qualifications are acquired. Classes can be attended at the Faculty of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures as well as the Faculty of Philosophy, and either allow for an extra focus on other disciplines in the Humanities and Social Science or on the consolidation of the student’s own major.
A stay abroad is possible within the framework of the Master’s Program, but is not compulsory.
The program concludes with the completion of a Master’s thesis.
