The Honey locust tree grows as a deciduous tree and reaches average heights of 15 metres. The tree species is native to the central and eastern parts of North America. It is often naturalised in southern Europe, but in Central Europe it is rather rare in the wild. Here it is often planted in parks and gardens. Due to its undemanding nature, the Honey locust is also occasionally used as a street tree.
The tree species is characterised by its delicate leaves, small fragrant flowers and spectacular legumes, which have earned it the name leather legume tree. The trunk and branches are often thorny. Young twigs are densely covered with simple thorns, while branches and smaller trunks bear branched tufts of thorns. Their size varies between 8 and 20 centimetres. This has also led to the name ‘false thorn of Christ’. The leaves are considered poisonous, but the seeds and fruits are edible.
