New Learning Venue for Better Physiotherapy Education: TU Dresden and Carus Akademie launch Teaching Center
The new Physiotherapy Teaching Center has gone into operation at the TU Dresden - a cooperation project of the University Health Management of the TUD with the Carus Academy at the Dresden University Hospital, supported by the Studentenwerk Dresden. The facility, which is unique in Germany so far, is an innovation in the training of physiotherapists.
Physiotherapy trainees in their 3rd year of training at the Carus Akademie will now receive part of their training in the field of occupational medicine/health prevention in the new practice rooms provided by the TUD and the Studentenwerk Dresden at Hochschulstraße 48. They will be professionally accompanied by TUD's medical officers and physiotherapy lecturers of the Carus Academy.
The training in the teaching center offers the students added value in several respects: The new learning location is an interface and bridge between the vocational school, which imparts fundamental theoretical knowledge, and the practical training, for example in clinics. In the teaching practice at the TU Dresden, theory and practice are closely linked with the aim of imparting a holistic physiotherapeutic competence. This is based on the so-called skills lab concept: in the protected space of the teaching practice and always under expert supervision, the trainees can learn and gain experience in a realistic working environment through practical work with patients. This applies not only to therapeutic work but also to organizational tasks in everyday practice.
Through its anchoring in the University Health Management, the Physiotherapy Teaching Center also offers special insights into a central medical field of the future: occupational medicine and preventive health. The employees of the TU Dresden will also benefit from this. In the future, they will be able to take advantage of physiotherapeutic services directly at their workplace or in their medical officer's office. These include, among other things, individual physio screening, physiotherapeutic instruction and advice or exercise offers.
"It is our concern to create an appreciative and healthy working atmosphere at the TU Dresden and thus to contribute to preventive health care at the workplace and to the well-being of all members," says Vice-Rector for University Culture Prof. Roswitha Böhm.
The teaching center is initially running in pilot mode due to the ongoing pandemic and related protective measures. Regular opening hours and appointments for all interested employees are expected to begin in September.
