Cycling for the climate, science, and improved mobility: CITY CYCLING Dresden starts on September 7
TU Dresden participating once again in CITY CYCLING 2024 with its own team
CITY CYCLING – Cycling for a better future is taking place in Dresden for the 14th time. From September 7 to September 27, 2024, all Dresden residents are invited to cover as much distance as possible by bike, thus collecting kilometers for their team and local community, all the while promoting sustainable travel through cycling. TU Dresden is also getting involved: Staff and students can register for the university’s “Technische Universität Dresden” team at stadtradeln.de/en/dresden/. Just like last year, it is also possible to establish sub-teams.
You can use the CITY CYCLING app to track your cycled routes via GPS. This data is then "donated" to a research team at the “Friedrich List“ Transport and Traffic Sciences. All data is analyzed anonymously and used by municipal authorities to optimize the city's cycling infrastructure. Using this data we can identify which routes cyclists take most frequently, the locations where cyclists travel slower or faster, and at which traffic lights they often have to wait a long time. As an alternative to the app, cycled kilometers driven can also be entered manually via the website. However, this data cannot be used to optimize cycling infrastructure.
Dr. Sven Lißner and Dr. Stefan Huber from the Chair of Transport Ecology also talk about their research using CITY CYCLING data in the latest episode of “Gute Frage” (Good question).
The nationwide CITY CYCLING competition is a campaign organized by the Climate Alliance, of which the City of Dresden is a member. The goal of the campaign is to contribute to protecting the environment, to inspire more people get cycling in Dresden, to promote health through more exercise, and also to keep cycling fun.
