Interreg CENTRAL EUROPE 2021–2027
The Interreg Central Europe programme supports cooperation between regions in Central Europe. It focuses on transnational cooperation for a smarter, greener, better connected and better governed Central Europe.
Approximately 225 million EUR of ERDF funding will be available in the funding period 2021–2027.
INTERREG Central Europe aims to reduce social, economic and spatial disparities within the regions of Central Europe. The transnational cooperation measures are intended to support the development and implementation of strategies, action plans, instruments, training and pilot measures.
Strand 1. Cooperating for a smarter central Europe
- SO1.1 Strengthening innovation capacities in central Europe
- SO 1.2 Strengthening skills for smart specialisation, industrial transition and entrepreneurship in central Europe
Strand 2. Cooperating for a greener central Europe
- SO2.1 Supporting the energy transition to a climate-neutral central Europe
- SO2.2 Increasing the resilience to climate change risks in central Europe
- SO2.3 Taking circular economy forward in central Europe
- SO2.4 Safeguarding the environment in central Europe
- SO2.5 Greening urban mobility in central Europe
Strand 3. Cooperating for a better connected Europe
- SO3.1 Improving transport connections of rural and peripheral regions in central Europe
Strand 4. Improving governance for cooperation in central Europe
- SO4.1 Strengthening governance for integrated territorial development in central Europe
Projects must have a transnational approach and improve regional development in a measurable and sustainable way. In this context, the measures should take into account the integrated environmental sustainability principle and also the horizontal principles of equality and non-discrimination.

Cooperation:
- at least three funding partners
- from three different countries, of which at least two partners must be based in the Programme area
- six to twelve project partners from six to ten countries.
The programme works on the basis of project pre-financing.
Responsibility:
One partner must act as a so-called “Lead Partner” and therefore takes responsibility for the realisation of the project.
Programme area:
The programme area includes Austria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, the Slovak Republic, Slovenia as well as parts of Germany (Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Berlin, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia and the Braunschweig/Lower Saxony region) and Italy (Emilia-Romagna, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Liguria, Lombardia, Piemonte, Provincia Autonoma Bolzano, Provincia Autonoma Trento, Valle d'Aosta, Veneto).
Funding rate:
The EU co-financing rate is 80 %. The remaining 20 % must come from own resources.
Total budget per project:
- 1,000,000 EUR to 4,000,000 EUR
The Programme addresses public and private stakeholders. Examples of partners eligible for funding under the Central Europe Programme:
- public authorities (national, regional, local authorities)
- research institutes and universities
- chambers, registered societies and associations
- business support organisations
- small and medium-sized enterprises (SME)
- non-governmental organisations
