What does “FAIR” have to do with research data management?
FAIR is an acronym for Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable, and is used to assess the continued usability of data.
What is a “FAIR dataset"?
- A dataset that has been meaningfully described with standardized metadata so that it can be found using suitable keywords and referenced via a persistent identifier, or PID (findable).
- This dataset should also be stored on a platform that other people have access to and the data should be transferable by following a standardized protocol (accessible).
- Data and metadata within this dataset should be provided in a format that guarantees usability by other people using other tools without loss of information (interoperable).
- Finally, the dataset should be described in such a way that a knowledgeable person can understand the content, the relevant links to other disciplines and the history of the individual pieces of data (reusable).
The “FAIRness” of a dataset does not necessarily have to target the entire expert community. A dataset can also be considered FAIR if it is only intended for a single research group.
