Learning to teach during your studies
Activities in continuing education and adult education are often associated with teaching. In the seminar "Teaching and learning in continuing education", students will gain initial experience in planning and designing courses. You will then find field reports from the seminar.
Our student Susanne Sell presents what she worked on in a seminar entitled "Teaching and learning in continuing education" and the advantages of writing seminar papers from her point of view.
Hello, I'm Susi, 26 years old and I'm currently in the 4th semester of the WBF/OE Master's degree program at TU Dresden.
In our degree program, you meet students with a wide range of previous experience. I have fellow students from Business Education and Management Training, Adult Education or Sociology. I myself previously studied Teacher Training - Middle Schools for the subjects German and Social Studies, Law and Economics at the University of Leipzig.
The modules in the WBF/OE Master's program are as diverse as the composition of our student groups. In the following, I would like to give you a little insight into one specific module, namely the module called "Teaching and Learning in Continuing Education".
Teaching and learning in continuing education" is about gaining knowledge about teaching and learning in continuing education. Successful completion of the module enables students to analyze teaching and learning processes, assess effects and justify decisions scientifically.
But how are these goals achieved? One of the ways is that we have the opportunity to design our own continuing education program as part of a seminar paper. In the following, I will show you which offer I developed in my own examination performance. I would also like to show you the opportunities and benefits of seminar papers during your studies from my personal perspective.
As already mentioned, I previously studied to become a teacher. During my teacher training, I learned a lot about teaching children and young people. Now, however, I can very well imagine working as an adult educator in the field of German as a foreign or second language. However, I have the feeling that I still lack didactic and methodological knowledge and skills for working with adults. For this reason, I decided to develop a concept for a further education course on the topic of "Leading seminars confidently - generating motivation" in the seminar "Teaching and learning in further education". It was important to me to choose a topic that really interests me personally and enables me to develop professionally.
My offer is aimed at people who are already working in adult education and those who aspire to work in it. By dealing with the technical content as part of a subject analysis, I was able to take away important impulses for generating motivation within the delivery of adult education courses, such as
- how to evoke exciting teaching and learning situations by using provocations in a targeted manner;
- how important it is to have a variety of methods to hand;
- how cooperative social forms can affect the motivation of seminar participants.
I hope I was able to give you a little insight into the module "Teaching and learning in continuing education" and also show you what added value I think writing a seminar paper can bring:
- You learn how to work academically by knowing how to obtain literature and review it in a focused way and cite it correctly.
- You learn how to structure content, spin red threads and improve your own writing skills.
- You can familiarize yourself with topics in which you are interested and which could also be of interest for your future career.
