Information for Applicants
The procedures for the appointment of chairs are often perceived as very complicated and lengthy. The aim of TU Dresden, however, is to make the procedure speedy, transparent and legally compliant. We would like to give you some information both during the application and later in the application process that will help you to effectively go through the procedures of appointment and entering into office. In addition to the Act on the Autonomy of Institutions of Higher Education in the Free State of Saxony, the legal framework for the implementation of the procedures is provided above all by the appointment regulations of TU Dresden and the tenure-track regulations of TU Dresden.
Chairs are usually advertised internationally. This gives especially external candidates fair chances, and ensures that choice can be made from among the best candidates.
The current invitations can be found on the TU Dresden webpages. For questions related to the requirements of the chair, application requirements, etc. please contact primarily the person mentioned in the tender text. Please observe all general instructions given for submitting your documents.
The deployed appointment committee shall, within nine months after the closure of the application period, submit a reasoned appointment proposal. After the examination by the rector, the faculty council decides upon this proposal. Afterwards negotiations with listed candidates shall follow.
TU Dresden has succeeded in shortening the duration of proceedings through various measures. Statistically, the faculty council already decides on the submitted appointment suggestion after seven months.
The appointment commission informs you about the current state of your procedure on a regular basis.
The Appointment Commission will – after approval by the rectorate – be appointed by the faculty council (at Central Scientific institutions with right of appeal from the equivalent Scientific Council). The panel is made up of voting members as well as members with an advisory vote. Usually the commission is set up by five university teachers, two members from the academic staff, two students and one non-voting member from employees from technical and administrative services. The Appointment Officer, the Equal Opportunities Officer and the Officer for the Disabled are invited to the meetings.
The Appeal Committee shall be responsible to carry out the selection procedure and to submit a reasoned proposal within nine months after the closing date.
The selection from amongst the applications received is usually conducted in three stages.
1) Based on the submitted documents
2) In a personal interview, which is usually composed of two parts:
- Public lecture with subsequent discussion
- (Nonpublic) interview with the commission
Different contents can be determined, for example:
- Trial lecture / conduction of a course
- Presentation of the personal teaching and / or research concept
- Presentation of own research projects
03) By obtaining of at least two external, usually comparative reports
In order to speed up the procedure, TU Dresden offers the possibility to invite expert evaluators to the presentation of the candidates; in these cases, the expert opinions are formally recorded.
Based on all the results of the selection procedure, the Appointment Commission shall draft a proposal that includes both a ranking of the selected candidates, as well as a comprehensive justification.
Decisive for the selection are the criteria in the invitation text. In individual cases, the commission defines further steps, including the request for supplementary papers or publications.
Internal appointments, namely the consideration of applications from the own university, are carried out only in exceptional cases, pursuant to the requirements of the Saxon University Autonomy Act.
The Commission shall submit the appointment proposal to the rector, who in particular checks the proper conduct of proceedings. After approval, the Faculty Council decides upon the proposal.
In the event that pre-negotiations have been successful, you are directly – without further negotiations – appointed to the chair. After accepting the call, the administrative part for the actual recruitment follows, for which the extensive appointment documents are needed. These documents also contain general notes concerning the title.
In addition to the Appointment Officer, the staff of Directorate Personnel, staff group University teachers, is at your disposal during this procedural stage.
With the law on the restructuring of services, salaries and pensions law in Saxony (Saxon Service Law Restructuring Act) of 18 December 2013, the legal framework for university teachers in these areas have changed significantly. The overview of the remuneration gives a first orientation (in German).
