Apply & Negotiate
TU Dresden aims for fast, transparent and legally compliant procedures.
In addition to the Act on the Autonomy of Institutions of Higher Education in the Free State of Saxony, the legal framework for the implementation of the procedures is provided above all by the appointment regulations of TU Dresden and the tenure-track regulations of TU Dresden.
The appointment commissionconsists of voting and advisory members and is generally made up of
- five professors
- two academic staff members
- two students and
- one member from the group of administrative and technical staff (without voting rights).
In addition, the appointments officer, the equal opportunities officer of the faculty (or central academic institution with appointment rights) and the representative for severely disabled persons accompany the work of the appointments commission.
The appointment commissionis responsible for the selection procedure and draws up a well-founded appointment proposal within nine months of the end of the advertisement.
The selection from amongst the applications received is usually conducted in three stages.
1) Based on the submitted documents
2) In a personal interview, which is usually composed of two parts:
- Public lecture with subsequent discussion
- (Nonpublic) interview with the commission
Different contents can be determined, for example:
- Trial lecture / conduction of a course
- Presentation of the personal teaching and / or research concept
- Presentation of own research projects
03) By obtaining of at least two external, usually comparative reports
In order to speed up the procedure, TU Dresden offers the possibility to invite expert evaluators to the presentation of the candidates; in these cases, the expert opinions are formally recorded.
Based on all the results of the selection procedure, the Appointment Commission shall draft a proposal that includes both a ranking of the selected candidates, as well as a comprehensive justification.
Decisive for the selection are the criteria in the invitation text. In individual cases, the commission defines further steps, including the request for supplementary papers or publications.
Internal appointments, namely the consideration of applications from the own university, are carried out only in exceptional cases, pursuant to the requirements of the Saxon University Autonomy Act.
When the Rector issues the call, we will also ask you to send us some documents that are needed to prepare for the appointment negotiations. While you have time to consider whether you want to enter into appointment negotiations with TU Dresden, we will coordinate a date for the appointment hearing in the meantime.
As a rule, we send the documents required for the procedure (call notification, offers, etc.) in advance by e-mail and at the same time by post. For reasons of confidentiality, we prefer a personal address for postal dispatch.
- Teaching and research concept with the resulting wishes regarding the staffing, equipment and facilities of the Chair: This concept helps us to prepare the interview efficiently and enables us to examine alternative offers - whether in terms of staffing or the shared use of existing technical equipment, etc. - if necessary. The more specific and detailed you are in describing your wishes regarding the required technology, special software programs or special room requirements, the more efficiently we can organize the meeting.
- Wishes regarding personal remuneration: As both the basic salary and the respective step allocation are non-negotiable, only variable performance-related pay can be negotiated.
- Current salary or remuneration statement.
- Fully completed personnel form: This is used to determine your personal circumstances and the expected level of basic salary.
- Curriculum vitae: As several months elapse between application and appointment negotiations, important changes may occur in the meantime. We would then be pleased to receive an updated CV.
- Only in the case of a tenure-track Chair: Presentations on the tenure evaluation criteria in the categories of research, academic teaching, knowledge transfer and academic self-administration in consultation with the faculty.
In the event that pre-negotiations have been successful, you are directly – without further negotiations – appointed to the chair. After accepting the call, the administrative part for the actual recruitment follows, for which the extensive appointment documents are needed. These documents also contain general notes concerning the title.
In addition to the Appointment Officer, the staff of Directorate Personnel, staff group University teachers, is at your disposal during this procedural stage.
The appointment to the chair is conducted by the rector. At the same time, successful candidates are usually appointed as civil servants of the federal state, on behalf of the Free State of Saxony.
