The tree rock pear is a cultivar and originally comes from the north-west of North America. In Europe, it has only been cultivated as an ornamental shrub for a few years. The deciduous shrub grows up to 8 metres tall and forms a narrow crown.
The flowers are white to pale pink in early spring (March/April) and provide food for insects such as bees, bumblebees and hoverflies. The dark purple fruits appear from June and are a tasty food source for birds. The sweet fruits are edible.
The tree rock pear is very robust and can withstand longer periods of drought, although it is a shallow-rooted plant. Due to its narrow growth habit, it requires little space and is therefore very suitable for planting along the edges of narrow streets, in front gardens or courtyards.
