Did you know?
The Whitebeam (Sorbus aria) is a tree with exceptionally decorative leaves and flowers that rarely grows higher than ten meters. It belongs to the family of the rose plants (Rosaceae) and is native to all of Europe, except for the north and southeast. The trees can live for over 200 years.
In early summer, the small white flowers appear, which are grouped together in false umbels and attract pollinators, especially wild bees, with their intense scent. The characteristic serviceberries, which look like centimeter-sized red apple-like fruits, develop from the blossoms. They serve as winter food for numerous bird species. After the first frost, the fruit develops an intense flavor.
The true whitebeam is planted as an ornamental tree in gardens, parks, or along roadsides. The wood of the Sorbus domestica is extremely resistant. Therefore, it was used in the past for the handles of axes and hammers or for barrel staves. The name whitebeam comes from the use of its dried and ground fruits, which were used in the past to stretch flour when baking bread.
