The Common horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) is a popular park and avenue tree that takes up a lot of space at a height of up to 30 metres. The tree can live up to 300 years. The tree species is originally native to northern Greece and Bulgaria. The tree was first introduced to Central Europe at the end of the 16th century.
The finger-shaped divided leaves are opposite and can grow up to 20 centimetres long. They have a double-toothed edge. The upright conical inflorescences are up to 30 centimetres high. The white flowers of the common horse chestnut are pollinated by bumblebees and bees. In large populations, the abundant nectar produced is sufficient for the production of pure horse chestnut honey. The pollen is collected by various species of wild bees. The maple bark owl (Acronicta aceris) and the blue sieve (Zeuzera pyrina) are interested in the leaves as caterpillar food. The brown fruits contain up to 30 per cent starch and approx. 5 per cent saponins. They are therefore inedible for human consumption, but are also a sought-after concentrated feed for farm animals.
