International Day for Tolerance
What is the International Day for Tolerance?
The International Day for Tolerance is celebrated every year on November 16. It follows the adoption of a Declaration of Principles on Tolerance by UNESCO’s 185 Member States in 1995. Every human being wants to be recognized and respected by others. But do we always afford others the same tolerance that we demand for ourselves? The anniversary provides the perfect opportunity to question our own views and possible prejudices.
TUD hosts the “living library”
TUD’s special contribution to this year’s International Day of Tolerance is the “living library.” It transforms people who have experienced discrimination and exclusion for various reasons into books to tell their stories. As is the case in a classic library, readers can borrow these books for a limited time. This means that they have twenty minutes for a one-on-one conversation with their chosen person. Of course, there are a few ground rules: The books only divulge as much information as they choose, and the moderation team is always to hand.
The living library inspires conversations between individuals who would probably have never met under normal circumstances. The books share views and experiences that all too often fall upon deaf ears. In hearing these perspectives, readers are encouraged to question their opinions and broaden their horizons.
The living library will take place on November 17 from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm at the Kulturcafé of the Johannstädter Kulturtreff (Elisenstraße 35, 01307 Dresden). Readers can drop by at any time and do not need to register in advance. Coaches from the group Jeder Mensch organize the event and are also responsible for the well-being of the books.
Would you like to become a book too?
Would you like to share your experiences in an unconventional way by getting involved in our living library? Come and join us for a non-committal talk with the coaches from Jeder Mensch and learn a bit more about the event and how you can participate. Before the event itself, there will be a basic workshop to prepare you. Of course, the team will be there to support you on the day too. Participation is free. Have we piqued your interest? Then, feel free to send us an email!
