International Weeks Against Racism

Introductory words
The "International Weeks against Racism" are nationwide weeks of action in solidarity with those affected by racism and opponents of racism. They take place every year around March 21, the "International Day to Overcome Racist Discrimination".
This year's motto of the Foundation against Racism is "Protecting human dignity". This year's focus at TU Dresden is on anti-Muslim racism.
The International Weeks against Racism start on March 17, 2025.
Many other stakeholders are also offering a diverse supporting program within Dresden. The offers can be found on this website: https: //www.dresden.de/de/leben/gesellschaft/migration/aktuelles/iwgr.php
Here you can find the program for the International Weeks against Racism at TU Dresden:
Anti-Muslim racism in the context of extremism research
Digital Lunchtalk with lecture with Prof. Dr. Uwe Backes (HAIT) and Manès Weisskircher (BMBF junior research group REXKLIMA)
- March 19, 2025, 13:00, digital
The lecture will guide you through the labyrinth of terms in comparative extremism research by explaining the different, often contradictory uses of terms such as extremism, radicalism, authoritarianism, illiberalism, fundamentalism, Islamism, jihadism and pointing out terminological problem areas that can make it difficult to understand the associated phenomena. Particular attention will be paid to forms of anti-Muslim racism (hostility towards Muslims). The lecture will be held in German.
After registration by e-mail, the link to the video conference will be sent.
AI and racism
Workshop with Dr. Philipp Lorenz-Spreen ( Junior Research Group Leader Computational Social Science, SynoSys and Network Scientist at the Center for Adaptive Rationality of the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin)
- March 27, 2025, 2:50 p.m. to 4:20 p.m.
Artificial intelligence, and more generally algorithms, are now omnipresent in our everyday lives and determine important social and societal functions, such as the selection of information or new contacts. However, the technology is far from neutral; it is shaped by the training data and optimization functions for which it was developed. So do algorithms reinforce existing racism? Does this further reinforce hierarchies and make minorities less visible? The workshop will be held in German.
Information on the location will be sent out after registration by e-mail.
Argumentation training against regulars' table slogans (fully booked)
Digital workshop with Jürgen Schlicher (Diversity Works)
- April 4, 2025, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., digital
Dull slogans, flat slogans, prejudices - often spoken casually and unabashedly: In order to counter such confrontations in an argumentative, confident and appropriate manner, the seminar offers exercises that test both situational action and useful communication techniques in a playful way. The digital workshop will be held in spoken German.
The course is already fully booked. A possible alternative event for TU employees is available from the ZfW: https: //bildungsportal.sachsen.de/opal/auth/RepositoryEntry/47851241472/CourseNode/1707190216333448012?0
Film and film talk "Es brennt"
Feature film, Germany, 2022/23, 89 min, Director: Erol Afşin
(The film will be shown in German with English subtitles)
- April 7, 2025, 6:30 pm, Klemperer Hall, SLUB, Zellescher Weg 18, 01069 Dresden
Omar, Amal and little Ahmad are a happy Arab family in Germany. When Amal is racially insulted and attacked in a playground by a man called Franz, a court case develops which becomes a burden for the whole family as the accused tries to portray himself as the "victim" of the incident.
The film was inspired in part by the fate of the Egyptian woman Marwa El-Sherbini, who was stabbed to death in 2009 after testifying in Dresden District Court. The screening will be followed by a film discussion to which the director Erol Afşin will also be invited, as well as contributors to the commemoration of Marwa El-Sherbini.
A film as part of the International Weeks against Racism in cooperation with the TU Dresden and the SLUB.
