Registration at the Citizen's Office ("Bürgerbüro") of the City of Dresden
Anyone moving into an apartment or a room (dormitory, shared flat "Wohnungsgemeinschaft" = "WG") in Dresden must register with the registration office within two weeks . The first registration of foreigners in Dresden takes place at the Central Citizens' Office Altstadt "Zentrales Bürgerbüro Altstadt": Further information, address and opening hours of the Citizens' Office.
To register or re-register, you will need
- Passport or identity card (valid proof of identity), your visa if applicable
- Rental contract from the Studentenwerk or private landlord or exact details of your address. Ask your landlord to provide you a landlord's certificate "Wohnungsbescheinigung" when you move in. Since November 1st, 2015, this has been a requirement for all registration procedures, including city registration and deregistration. You can find a commented version of this form on the website of the DDc Welcome Center of the TU Dresden.
You will receive a registration certificate "Meldebescheinigung"/"Meldezettel" from the registration office.
Any change of address or residence within the city or country must be reported to the registration office.
Before you leave Germany, you must deregister and will receive a certificate of deregistration ("Abmeldebescheinigung").
Please do not forget to inform TU Dresden of your new address after moving! Please inform the ILK via .
Immigration office ("Ausländerbehörde")
Students/researchers from EU countries do not need to apply for a residence permit at the Immigration Office in Dresden.
- EU citizens and citizens of EEA countries can apply for a confirmation of their right to stay in Germany ("Freizügigkeitsbescheinigung") at the Immigration Office (right to free movement according to § 2 FreizügG/EU).
- Information on the certificate of freedom of movement and download of the application form.
Students/researchers from third countries (non-EU countries) are required to apply for a residence permit at the Immigration Office within 3 months of entering the Federal Republic of Germany. For stays of up to 3 months, you only need to register at the Residents' Registration Office ("Bürgerbüro").

Bank account
The most common type of bank account in Germany is a "Girokonto" (current account), which is linked to a debit card "EC-Karte" and usually to an online banking. Most financial transactions are handled through this account, such as receiving your salary or scholarship, paying your rent and bills, using your debit card to buy food and clothing, etc. We therefore recommend that you open a German or European bank account. Such an account is even required to withdraw money from the TU Dresden.
To open a bank account in Dresden, you will need ...
- Passport or identity card, your visa if applicable
- Registration certificate ("Meldebescheinigung") from the city of Dresden
- Proof of your contractual relationsship with the TU Dresden, for students e.g. letter of admission or student ID card, for interns and scholarship holders a Scholarship Agreement and Hosting Agreement if applicable, for exchange researchers e.g. visiting researcher contract, etc.
In Germany, most invoices are paid by bank transfer. Invoices are often accompanied by a bank transfer form, or you can make the transfer online using the bank details on the invoice. Writing and cashing checks or paying by credit card on the spot is rather unusual.

Dresden offers a well-developed and reliable public transportation network that will help you get around the city quickly and comfortably. Here is the most important information for your stay:
Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe (DVB)
Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe (DVB) operates the main public transport network in Dresden. You can use streetcars, buses and ferries to reach almost all parts of the city. DVB offers a handy journey planner on its website and in the DVB app, which allows you to quickly find the best routes and travel times. It is best to use these platforms, as Google Maps does not always provide completely accurate connections in real time. You can find more information directly from DVB here.
MOBIbike Dresden
Dresden offers the MOBIbike rental bike system for short distances. You can easily rent bikes at numerous stations throughout the city and get from A to B flexibly. Ideal for spontaneous trips or to supplement your public transport routes. You can find more information here.
Germany ticket for €49
The Deutschlandticket (€49 per month) is a simple and inexpensive way to use public transport throughout Germany. In Dresden, this ticket covers all city transport (streetcars, buses, MOBIbike) and also allows you to use regional trains operated by Deutsche Bahn (DB) in the region. An ideal ticket if you want to remain flexible both within the city and for shorter trips in the surrounding area. Information on the deutschlandsticket can be found (unfortunately only in German) here.
Deutsche Bahn (DB) and regional transport
The regional network of Deutsche Bahn (DB) is also well connected and allows you to take trips to nearby cities and regions. For up-to-date information on connections and timetables for regional trains, use the DB connection information service, which you can find on the Deutsche Bahn website or in the DB Navigator app. Again, Google Maps does not always provide the most accurate information for train connections, so we recommend using the official DB tools here.
Dresden is known for its rich history, impressive architecture and diverse cultural offerings. Whether you want to explore the baroque old town, visit museums and galleries or simply enjoy the natural surroundings and the Elbland region - Dresden has something for everyone.
Tourist information on the web
