About the Center
Founded in late 2017, the Center for France and Francophonie (CFF) has a broad interdisciplinary focus and includes members from numerous faculties, ranging from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences to the Faculties of Electrical and Computer Engineering, School of Medicine, and Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering.
The CFF sees itself as
- a hub for German-Francophone academic and cultural exchange,
- a hub for international cooperation
- a facilitator of expertise on Francophone cultural regions.
The CFF cooperates with the DRESDEN-concept partners, supports the Research Priority Area “Culture and Societal Change,” and contributes to the visibility of TU Dresden’s international relations.
Structured promotion of early-career researchers is provided through the Franco-German Doctoral College, funded by the Franco-German University.
The CFF is a founding member of the network of university centers for France and the Francophonie in Germany.
It also serves as an organizer and venue within the Dresden Literature Network.

Panel Discussion [online] – What on Earth Is Going On in France? Pension Reform, Protests, and the Consequences
Online panel discussion with Kolja Lindner and Hélène Miard-Delacroix
Poster on the occasion of the (online) panel discussion “What on earth Is going on in France? Pension reform, protests and their consequences,” organized by the Network of University Centers for French and Francophone Studies in Germany on June 13, 2023.
France is in turmoil. For months, the debate over pension reform has kept the country on edge. After the president pushed through the reform without parliamentary approval, strikes, demonstrations, and riots have erupted. Sometimes the protests turn into outright violence. Members of Parliament are being threatened in a targeted manner. Even in Parliament, tumultuous scenes follow one after another. What on earth is going on in France? Is the reform a matter of common sense, an adjustment to reality that is being rejected by the political extremes? Or does it exacerbate social inequality? Can the escalation be explained by polarizing procedures and institutions, or by the president’s style? Is the anger toward the government an outburst of frustration that has been building up for years? What will the long-term consequences be?
Hélène Miard-Delacroix is a professor of contemporary German history and culture at the Sorbonne; Kolja Lindner teaches in the Department of Political Science at the University of Paris X. Together, we aim to better understand how to interpret the events in France appropriately.
Organized by the Network of University Centers for France and the Francophonie in Germany as part of the online series “German-French Perspectives in Dialogue” at the initiative of the Center for France at the Free University of Berlin, the Centre Ernst Robert Curtius (CERC) at the University of Bonn, the Center for France | Francophonie at TU Dresden, and the IZKT at the University of Stuttgart.
