FAQs (valid from winter semester 2024/25)
PLEASE NOTE: The following FAQs will only be valid from the winter semester of 2024/25 onwards. For the summer semester of 2023, the FAQs on the website of the test run the will apply.
BEFORE PARTICIPATION
Prerequisite is the university entrance qualification for German universities (e.g. the Abitur).
For applicants who have not acquired their study qualification at a German-speaking institution, German language skills in accordance with §7 of the Immatrikulationsordnung are required.
Enrollment information will be posted on this page soon.
The regular application/enrollment deadlines for undergraduate, open-admission programs at TU Dresden apply.
No, there are no admission restrictions for TU Dresden's Orientation Program.
No, participation in the Orientation Program is not possible parallel to attending school. The OSM is equal in scope to an undergraduate study program and cannot be attended only in the afternoons/evenings.
The Orientation Program offers the opportunity to attend courses from all schools (science, humanities and social sciences, engineering sciences, civil and environmental engineering, medicine*) and thus gain an impression of the wide range of study programs offered at TU Dresden (Block A). In addition, Blocks B, C and D support the orientation process, teach mathematics skills or academic reading and writing, train key competencies and offer insights into professional practice. At the end of the Orientation Program, you can make a well-founded study decision and are optimally prepared for your studies.
If you start a regular study program and change programs later, this may have an impact on the continuation of financial support offers (BAföG, scholarships ...).
DURING PARTICIPATION
You are regularly enrolled as a student at TU Dresden during the Orientation Program.
During the Orientation Program you will be supported through an individual mentoring- and coaching-program (Mentoring- und Coachingangebots).
An OSM semester comprises a total of 30 credit points (CP), which you can compile individually from Blocks A, B, C and D. Each CP or credit point awarded represents a certain amount of time or work. A semester in a regular study program usually comprises 30 CP. This already includes time for self-study. Participation in the OSM is therefore no more strenuous than studying in a regular study program.
The short answer: Yes.
The slightly longer answer: In the engineering mathematics modules of Block B (for prospective students of engineering sciences as well as civil and environmental engineering), we place a lot of emphasis on training mathematical methods without the use of a calculator. We repeat content from the “Abitur” (A-levels), but also discuss topics that are most likely not yet known from school or are currently no longer covered in schools.
AFTER PARTICIPATION
Yes, successfully completed exams can be credited to a later study program upon application.
That depends on the study offers/contents of the other universities. If the study program at the other university includes modules/examinations that are similar in content and scope to the modules/examinations completed at TU Dresden, you can apply for recognition. The final decision is made by the respective examination boards of the other universities.
If you decide to study at TU Dresden after the Orientation Program, you apply regularly for your desired study program.
SUPPORT AND FINANCING
The basic OSM program is free of charge. Only the regular semester fee is charged, which includes, among other things, the cost of the semester ticket. The semester fee for the summer semester 2023 is 300.30 EUR.
more information
If you wish, you can book various elective modules in Block B "Qualification". These elective modules are subject to a fee.
more information
The Orientation Program is not eligible for BAföG funding, as it is not related to a specific course of study and does not lead to a professional qualification. In return, however, the enrollment in the subsequent course of study is not considered a change of course of study under BAföG law.
For the subsequent (full-time) course of stuy, BAföG can be applied for in the regular way.
Starting with the summer semester 2024, there will be the possibility to apply for a scholarship of 300 EUR per semester for the duration of the Orientation Program. The corresponding application documents can be submitted until 31.03.2024. Further information can be found in the section "Financing and Funding".
Prospective students who would like to participate in the Orientation Program in the winter semester 2024/25 can apply for one of five "Deutschlandstipendien". The "Deutschlandstipendium" includes a grant of 300 euros per month. The corresponding application documents can be submitted from 1 - 15 July 2024. You can find more information on the TUD website of the Deutschlandstipendium.
