Retrospective - Teaching Day 2018
On 15th November 2018, TU Dresden once again opened its doors for the Teaching Day in the Auditorium Centre.
All teachers and students, as well as those interested in teaching and studying, were warmly invited to join in with talks, workshops, discussions, presentations and a closing improv theatre performance on the topic of Good Teaching - Quality Aims in Discourse.
The patron was the Vice-Rector for Academic and International Affairs at TU Dresden.
Programme
Entitled “Good Teaching - Quality Aims in Discourse”, not only did the programme for the Teaching Day promote exchange and networking among teaching staff and allow the participant to view and assess the topic of teaching, but it also enabled participation in TU Dresden’s strategy development processes.
Documentation of Teaching Day 2018
Since 1998, the Association of Friends and Sponsors of TU Dresden (GFF), have provided a financial award for teaching at TU Dresden. This prize is awarded for outstanding teaching that generates motivation to improve teaching and develop new ideas and concepts.
This year was also the first time TU Dresden awarded a prize for gender-sensitive teaching. The aim was to recognise exemplary teaching concepts, events and staff that take gender aspects into account and include these when planning their teaching activities.
The 2018 GFF teaching award was presented by the Vice-Rector for Academic and International Affairs, Prof. Hans Georg Krauthäuser: Presentation of award winner
The accolade by GGF was presented by the Vice-Rector for Academic and International Affairs, Prof. Hans Georg Krauthäuser: Presentation of winner

The collaborative keynote focussed on the following question: “How much freedom is required in teaching?”, looking at it from three different perspectives:
Perspective 1: On the necessity of academic freedom as quality
Perspective 2: Good teaching - an evidence based orientation
Perspective 3: Quality management at TU Dresden
The perspectives were followed by a discussion.
Sessions 1 and 2 were dedicated to the questions of which quality aims are currently being discussed and already practiced and how these can be further developed.
Sessions 3 and 4 took a more in depth look at the topics covered by the keynote speakers and the concepts of the teaching prize award winners.
Session 5 gave students, who work as tutors to support teaching at TU Dresden, or are interested in doing so, the opportunity to talk with others and develop their ideas for teaching.
Sessions 1 & 2:
On the day before the main Teaching Day events, representatives of the various faculties and scientific institutions at TU Dresden held area-specific meetings using an innovative format. The aim was to support a dialogue on the quality of teaching at faculty, school and university level and to highlight existing commitments and developments.
On the Teaching Day itself, the results of these talks were presented to attendees over the course of two sessions. Attendees were invited to consider and discuss the results with focus group representatives so that they could be tied in with the topic content.
Session 3: Meet the Keynote Speakers
Moderation: Kathrin Müller, ZfW.
Session 4: Meet the prize winners
Moderation: Sandra Rechenberg, LiT+, TU Chemnitz.
Session 5: Tutorinnen und Tutoren in der Hochschullehre
Moderation: Nina Melching, Schreibzentrum
In the foyer of the Auditorium Centre, guests were able to interact throughout the day with teaching staff, structural units and projects at TU Dresden and other institutions that support and accompany teaching, at their poster presentations. Have a look at the overview here (in German).
Contributions were divided into 4 categories:
- The practice of teaching - Teaching and learning concepts that improve the quality of study
- Service - Advice and support opportunities to promote successful studying and teaching quality
- Tools - Methods and aids to support teachers and students in shaping their teaching and learning
- Quality management - Stakeholders and methods for recording and analysing the quality of study
The Teaching Day finished with performers from improexport, an improvisational theatre group from Dresden, providing a theatrical reflection based on the main impressions, content and experiences of the participants.
Not only were the performers able to incorporate an overall summary of the central results of the day in their improvised piece, but their spontaneous and humorous interpretation also contributed to ensuring that the results will be remembered, bringing in new contexts and opening new perspectives on the topics discussed.
The Teaching Day was organised by the Centre for Continuing Learning, particularly by the LiTplus project staff.
The Centre for Quality Analysis (ZQA) and the Centre for Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching (ZiLL) also helped out with preparation and implementation.
