TUD LECTURES "challenges of democracy"
In 2021, the Department of University Culture launched the TUD Lectures series in which experts from a broad range of disciplines at the TU Dresden examine current topics. In lectures of up to 1 1/2 hours, the experts present their knowledge in a transparent and understandable way. The TUD Lectures are addressed to the TUD community and all interested participants.

Beyond civility?
Denigration, hostility and violence as a democratic challenge
Do belittlement and hostility pose a threat to democratic coexistence? To what extent and what kind of disputes are conducive to democracy? What are the limits of democratic debate? What roles do violence and trust play?
In the first installment of the TUD Lecture Series “Challenges of Democracy,” questions concerning the civility of democratic discourse are addressed and focus is placed on disparagement, hostility and violence in the context of democratic interaction.

School as a field of conflict
School is a place where everyone inevitably meets once they reach a certain age - it is therefore also inevitable that social conflicts manifest themselves in this space. Right now, the hot button topics include the shortage of skilled workers and provisions for refugees, before that it was the pandemic and right-wing populism. How should schools deal with social conflicts and in what way do they actually become apparent?
Prof. Anja Besand looks closely at the example of how challenges in dealing with group-related hostility can be applied to what is going on in schools in Saxony and how we should avoid the most serious mistakes amidst this confrontation.

Does science create knowledge for all?
The goal of successful science communication is to encourage social participation and even involvement in university research. However, true participation is not limited to receiving the results of completed research projects, but also includes active discussions about ongoing knowledge generation or even participation in projects, studies and experiments.
In the third installment of TUD’s “Challenges of Democracy” lectures series, questions concerning opportunities for participation in the scientific research process are addressed.

Risky leap into the sea of information
The public and the world of academia have been questioning how social media such as Facebook, Instagram or TikTok change the way people use information, even well before the war with Ukraine broke out. The sheer volume and wealth of contradictions in news, as well as the fact that it is selected by algorithms and commented by other users, has an increasing influence on what information reaches us and how we process it. This also has an impact on public discourse and the way that we communicate and discuss with one another.
In the fourth installment of TUD’s “Challenges of Democracy” lectures series, questions concerning the significance and consequences of information spread using social media are addressed.
