Founded in 1828, TUD Dresden University of Technology has a history that stretches back nearly 200 years. With a wide range of subjects, our university plays an outstanding role in Germany’s university landscape. At TUD, science and engineering work together with the humanities, cultural and social sciences and medicine to find solutions to the greatest challenges of our time. Excellence

Since 2012, TUD Dresden University of Technology has been one of Germany’s eleven Universities of Excellence. The Excellence title confirms the potential of one of Germany’s largest technical universities and is a driving force for its research and innovation. TUD is one of the top universities in Germany and currently boasts three Clusters of Excellence: Physics of Life (PoL), Center for Tactile Internet with Human-in-the-Loop (CeTI), and Complexity and Topology in Quantum Matter (ct.qmat).

Our vision is to continue TU Dresden’s transformation into a globally oriented yet regionally anchored top university for the 21st century. A broad basis of subject areas join forces at TU Dresden to find solutions to the challenges of our time. Interna­tionaliza­tion

TUD Dresden University of Technology has earned itself an outstanding international reputation. Approximately 18% of our current students come from abroad, and our researchers come from 89 different countries. Science is international! This is why an international outlook and approach is decisive in the global competition for students and researchers. Maintaining teaching and research to the highest international standards, developing TUD into a cosmopolitan campus, and expanding international networks in research, teaching, technology transfer and administration are therefore crucial tasks.

TUD - strong in research, diverse in teaching

TUD Dresden University of Technology is one of the largest universities of technology in Germany. With 17 Faculties across five Schools, we offer an extensive variety of 119 degree programs and undertakes research in five focal areas of research, which reflect the strengths of the university: (1) Health Sciences, Biomedicine and Bioengineering, (2) Information Technology and Microelectronics, (3) Materials Science and Engineering, (4) Energy, Mobility and Environment, and (5) Culture and Societal Change. These are considered exemplary throughout Germany and Europe.

TUD has been one of the German Universities Excellence for over ten years. We defended this title in 2019 with our “TUD 2028 – Synergy and Beyond” proposal, and, as a University of Excellence, we receive permanent Excellence Strategy funding from the German Federal and State Governments.

Three new Clusters of Excellence started their work in 2019. PoL: Physics of Life researches the foundations behind the dynamic organization of living matter. Ct.qmat: Complexity and Topology in Quantum Matter designs novel materials for the revolutionary, state-of-the-art tech of the future. And CeTI: Center for Tactile Internet with Human-in-the-Loop pursues the vision of constructing cyber-physical communication networks with real-time effect.

To create knowledge for life, the university covers many bases – from the fundamentals of the natural sciences to robotics and artificial intelligence to the science of humankind and our cultures, including health, aging, ethics, mobility, construction, nature conservation, and innovative forms of harnessing energy. All this is made possible by our 8,500 members of staff and over 30,000 students.

History

TUD’s history stretches back nearly 200 years: The “Technische Bildungsanstalt Dresden” was founded on May 1, 1828, to train specialists in technical fields. The tumultuous politics of the 20th century did not prevent the university from strengthening its capacity for innovation, its pronounced pioneering spirit, and its openness to collaborations with non-university research partners, business and society. As a result, TUD has a broad scientific basis that encompasses all major academic disciplines. Today, we are one of the world's leading universities.
