Summer Cinema 2024
What could be more appropriate for a movie theater in summer than to free itself from the confines of its four walls and head outdoors! With financial support from the TU Dresden Student Council, Kino im Kasten is once again able to present an open-air series of events on campus this year. Starting on 7 June, they will be showing a summer film every Friday from 9:30 pm on the meadow directly behind the Auditorium Center . If you arrive in time, you can grab one of the coveted comfortable StuRa loungers and enjoy a wonderful evening with friends, fellow students or colleagues.
Of course, you can also bring a blanket to sit directly on the lawn. Mosquito repellent and warm clothing are recommended. In the event of rain or storms, the respective screenings will be moved to the Kino im Kasten auditorium and will start there at the same time. In case of bad weather, please note the information on the website and/or on the social media channels of Kino im Kasten.

07.06. | To be or not to be |
In this comedy, a Polish theater troupe becomes involved in the resistance movement just as Germany invades Poland. The main culprit is a relationship between the main character Joseph (Jack Benny), his wife Maria (Carole Lombard) and the pilot Sobinski (Robert Stack). Behind the gags, Jewish director Lubitzsch spins a resolute appeal for anti-fascism. |
21.06. | JUNO |
Snarky teenager Juno (Elliot Page) is astonished when she holds a positive pregnancy test in her hand. After all, she only had an ill-considered one-night stand with her best buddy Paulie Bleeker (Michael Cera). Now Juno has to make a decision: What to do with the growing fetus in her belly? The screenplay by Diablo Cody and the film's soundtrack date it firmly to the indie trends of the 2000s, but the story about an unwanted pregnancy and the young woman who has to grow up as a result is consistently topical. The main focus is on Juno's own freedom to decide about her future and the future of the potential baby. |
28.06. | Footloose |
The (fictional) town of Bomont in Utah embodies pretty much all the values that the US state is said to have: Tranquil, rural, highly religious. City dweller Ren (Kevin Bacon) is not thrilled about having to move in, especially as local priest Moore (John Lithgow) and the town council have banned dancing in the town. And dancing is one of Ren's passions - just like Reverend Moore's daughter Ariel (Lori Singer)... Although Footloose is primarily regarded as a dance classic, the generational conflict and criticism of religious dogma also cement the film as a declaration of love for the youthful urge for freedom. |

Perks of Being a Wallflower |
Shy, depressed Charlie (Logan Lerman) has great difficulty making friends at his new high school in Pittsburgh. With the support of his English teacher (Paul Rudd) and siblings Sam and Patrick (Emma Roberts, Ezra Miller), he finally manages to come out of his shell - but fears about the future, heartbreak and the traumas of his past threaten to catch up with Charlie. In this warm-hearted and empathetic adaptation of his own novel, Chbosky tackles weighty subjects such as abuse, homophobia and mental illness and sheds light on the small moments in life that can liberate us from them. |
12.07. | Rushmore |
15-year-old Max Fisher (Jason Schwartzman) is what you might call an 'extracurricular enthusiast': Whether it's plays, French Club board, founder of the Backgammon Society or president of the Beekeepers Club (and many more!), Max loves to get involved in the life of Rushmore Academy. His falling grades, a crush on his teacher (Olivia Williams) and his friendship with businessman Blume (Bill Murray) put a spanner in the works of his ambitions. In the course of the movie, the young man from a modest background has to find out where his true priorities lie. |
19.07. | Ferris turns blue |
In the beige halls of a Chicago high school, it can sometimes feel like life is passing you by. But not with Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick)! To give himself an unforgettable day, he plays sick in front of his parents and grabs his girlfriend Sloane (Mia Sara) and his best friend Cameron (Alan Ruck). The latter more or less volunteers his father's Ferrari. What follows is a joyride through the sights of Chicago and all kinds of shenanigans, at the end of which it is not Ferris but the anxiety-ridden Cameron who is in the spotlight and shows us what he is capable of: You have to take the freedom to enjoy life. |
