The following student projects are eligible for funding in this funding line:
- Stays abroad for writing a final thesis
- Semesters abroad for students at universities worldwide (outside of the ERASMUS+ area* and outside of other DAAD programs)
For study projects, you must provide evidence of the extent to which credits earned abroad will be recognized at TU Dresden.
* Study visits cannot be funded with PROMOS if it is possible to receive funding through Erasmus+. Study visits within the Erasmus+ area can only be funded by PROMOS if the following exception applies:
You are not eligible to participate in another Erasmus+ stay abroad.
Language courses (3 weeks to 6 months
Funding for students and doctoral students to participate in language courses at universities or established language institutes worldwide – these courses must consist of at least 25 hours per week. Moreover, students can apply for a lump-sum of EUR 500 per person to cover course fees.
Language course grants are awarded for the purpose of improving existing skills in a foreign language. Applicants must therefore prove that they have studied the language in question for at least two semesters at a German university or have comparable knowledge.
Specialist courses (5 days to 6 weeks)
For students and doctoral students wishing to participate in specialist courses (e.g. summer schools) offered by universities or scientific organizations abroad, funding is available worldwide. Moreover, students can apply for a lump-sum of EUR 500 per person to cover course fees.
Please note! In general, PROMOS funding can only be granted if there is no travel warning issued by the German Foreign Office for the country or region in question during the period of stay/funding (www.auswaertiges-amt.de).
Students of TU Dresden enrolled in Bachelor’s, Master’s, Diplom and State Examination degree programs are eligible to apply. Applicants must either:
- a.) Hold German citizenship
- b.) Be deemed German in accordance with § 8 para. 1 no. 2 ff., para. 2, 2a and 3 BAföG (in this context, the wording of the law applies, which can be found at: www.bafög.de.)
- c.) Or be an international student or graduate, provided they are enrolled in a degree program at TU Dresden with the goal of obtaining a degree or doctorate from TUD.
Persons who fall under b.) or c.) are not eligible to apply for grants to study in their home country.
Bachelor's students can apply from the 3rd semester onwards, Master's students from the 1st semester onwards.
The partial scholarship comprises a:
- Monthly partial scholarship rate usually amounting to EUR 350 (varies in some countries, see " Lump sums") and/or
- One-time country-specific travel allowance ("Lump sums” overviews)
- Lump-sum to cover course fees (for language and specialist courses)
Please note that at TUD, PROMOS does not cover tuition fees. Scholarships cannot be extended beyond six months. For students receiving BAföG in Germany, PROMOS is non-deductable from your BAföG loan. If you receive Auslands-BAföG (state loan for a stay abroad), this may be reduced by the Studentenwerk according to the amount of the traveling allowance. Please note that you must notify the Studentenwerk if you are receiving PROMOS funding.
An application for cost coverage can also be submitted to the International Office if additional costs are incurred abroad due to a disability or chronic illness.
We can only consider applications that are submitted in full and before the deadline. An application does not automatically guarantee receipt of the PROMOS scholarship.

The scientific quality of the project (including language skills) and academic performance play an important role in the selection criteria. In addition, the university professor's assessment and the applicant's civic engagement are also taken into account.
Selection is made on the basis of the documents on file. There are no additional personal interviews with applicants.
Written decisions on applications for stays, which primarily take place in the first half of the year, will be sent via post towards the beginning of January.
