This survey lecture course will provide an overview of U.S. American literary history from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. It will cover central literary periods and movements (such as realism, naturalism, modernism, and postmodernism), and introduce students to select authors, various genres, salient themes, and narrative techniques. Taking an approach which assumes that literature does not merely mirror its respective time but co-constitutes it, the lectures will explore how literary texts generate knowledge about cultural differences and social inequalities, how they shape various U.S. American counter/publics and subjectivities, and how they reflect on the workings and potential effects of their own literariness..
