Change of course/subject within TU Dresden
A change of course is always present if
- the course,
- the/a subject (e.g. in teacher training and the Faculty of Linguistics, Literature and Cultural Studies) or
- the qualification aspired towards (e.g. from Bachelor to Master)
is to be changed. This also affects students who have successfully completed a course and would like to follow it with a second course (e.g. Master).
The generally valid application periods for courses with open admission and (NC) courses with restricted admission apply to a change of course/subject. It should be noted that deviating application periods for participation in aptitude tests apply in some courses. Please find these periods in the course data in our study information system.
You can apply for a change of course/subject via the selma student portal. To do this, please select the function [Application]. In the future, you will find all the changes of course for which you have applied there under [Current Applications]
At the end of the online application, every application receives information regarding which documents have to be submitted for which course in a printout. Applicants who are applying for a change of course to a higher semester have to remember to apply for a certificate about credited semesters (>certificate of transferable credits) from the competent Chair of the examination board (through the Examination Office). You can find tips for this on our web page: Tips for Applying for the Certificate of Transferable Credits). The application for the certificate of transferable credits should generally take place at least 6 to 8 weeks before the deadline for applications.
In the event of a change of course within TU Dresden, it is not necessary to apply for deregistration in the previous course. Only students who would like to leave the university have to deregister.
BAföG recipients should note that a change of course/subject can only be funded under certain conditions. Please enquire about this in good time in advance at the BAföG Office.
No, please do not re-register for the old course! You will be asked to pay for the semester fee for enrolment in the new course separately.
If admission to the desired NC course was not successful, re-registration for the previous course can be triggered by payment of the semester fees, using your student number, even if the official re-registration period has already expired.

A change of subject within a teacher training degree programme does not change the standard period of study in this degree programme. This means that before changing subjects, students must consider whether the maximum period of study available in the teacher training programme in accordance with § 35 para. 4 Act on the Autonomy of Institutions of Higher Education in the Free State of Saxony can still be adhered to by a late change of subject. If the studies are already too far advanced, an inability to pass the state examination may be prematurely determined. It is advisable to seek Student Information and Counselling Services before changing subjects.
