Inhalt
This survey lecture course will provide an overview of US literary history from the beginning to the Civil War. It will cover central periods and literary movements (such as writings of the colonial and revolutionary periods and the early republic, Romanticism), and introduce students to select authors, various genres, salient themes, and narrative techniques. Taking an approach which assumes that literature does not merely mirror its respective time but co-constitutes an understanding of it, the survey lecture will explore how literary texts generate knowledge about cultural differences and social inequalities, how they shape various U.S. American counter/publics and subjectivities before and during the process of nation building, and how they reflect on the workings and potential effects of their own literariness.
This lecture course will take place digitally and asynchronously; material will be provided via OPAL.
