Inhalt
"Asking questions is the first way to begin change" (Kubra Sait, Indian model). “Can the subaltern speak?”, “Who has a voice?”, “How does othering work?” “What is intersectionality?”, “To which extent is literature political?”, “What is postcolonial literature?” – and why are all of these questions directly linked to Postcolonial Studies?
In this lecture, we are going to find answers to these questions while reading excerpts of some of the best known postcolonial novels of the last 20 years, coming out of India, Sri Lanka and the UK. Postcolonial Theory and Literature II provides a comprehensive introduction to postcolonial and Black British literature as well as to the methods and approaches of postcolonial theory. We will not only discuss texts by Salman Rushdie, Arundhati Roy, Zadie Smith, Hanif Kureishi, Anuk Arudpragasam and Naomi Munaweera but also look at the process of identity and community building after colonialism, discuss concepts such as hybridity, globalisation and neo-colonialism, and focus on key concepts and theorists such as Edward Said, Homi K. Bhabha and Gayatri Spivak. Moreover, there will be guest lectures and interventions by Prof Shermal Wijewardene (University of Colombo) and Thilini Meegaswatta (Open University, Sri Lanka/TUD).
