Inhalt
How does memory work? What is memory and which kinds of memory do exist? Where is the difference between communicative and cultural memory, between semantic and episodic memory, and why is memory so important for the development of our culture? This lecture is the second part of a series of lectures focussing on memory in British literature and culture. While the first part offered a diachronic survey of more than 600 years, this lecture will focus on different forms, notions and theories of memory prominent during the last 100 years. It will include texts and films such as E.M. Forster’s Ansell, Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Remains of the Day, Julian Barnes’ England, England and Christopher Nolan’s Memento. We will also take a look at Marcel Proust’s monumental novels In Search of Lost Time. Moreover, this lecture will give a thorough introduction to current concepts of memory by Jan and Aleida Assmann, Maurice Halbwachs, Pierre Nora, Renate Lachmann and others which we will then apply to the texts and films. To attend this lecture, it is not necessary to have attended the first part of this lecture series.
An extensive bibliography will be provided at the beginning of the term. Please buy: Julian Barnes. England, England. London 2008 (1998).
