Inhalt
This survey lecture course provides a general view of US cultural history from the early European colonization of North America to recent moments in a transnationally situated United States. It will heighten an understanding of the dynamics of American cultural history by way of focusing on salient figures who have contributed to shaping an understanding of it. The lecture provides an overview of how American selves, as points of departure for an engagement with crucial periods, sites, and issues of American culture, generate knowledge about cultural differences and social inequalities, among others, and how they shape various American counter/publics before and during the process of nation building. It also reflects on the medial and discursive forces that constitute the subjectivities of American selves and their potential effects on their times and beyond in the first place.
